FEBRUARY 13TH, 2023

A Regular Board Meeting of the Board of Education of Blue Earth Area, I.S.D. #2860 was held on Monday, February 13th, 2023 at 6:00 pm. Board Members were present in person with Superintendent M. Fletcher for the regular board meeting at the meeting location: Blue Earth Area High School Media Center 1125 Highway 169 N Blue Earth, MN 56013.

VII. District Reports:

Holly Vogltance – Business Professionals of America (BPA) – Holly and several students gave a presentation about what BPA is and a brief history of prior Regional competitions they have taken part in and future regional and state competitions are ahead.

LeAnne Scholl – Transportation Update – LeAnne presented on the current fleet of buses, the needs and requirements to replenish the aging fleet and the challenges faced when purchasing buses. She also presented a new “Opt In” form required to have your child transported to/from school. Also, stop arm cameras are being installed on all buses due to a grant received by the district.

Brian Kokos & Ty Sturtz – Calendar – Mr. Kokos and Mr. Sturtz gave a brief update on the Calendar Committee and how the school calendars are drafted.

Sophie Keister – Miss MN Teen Volunteer – Mrs. Fletcher presented on Sophie’s behalf regarding the school partnering with her and the “Thumbs Up for Mental Health” initiative.

VIII. Chairperson’s Report: Dates for work sessions were presented and Monday, Feb. 27th, at 5:30 pm at the HS Media Center was chosen as a work session for the Board.

IX. Superintendent’s Report:

A. Tennis Court Update – The City Council of Blue Earth would like to continue discussions regarding partnering with the school to update/add tennis courts.

B. Tennis Association – Members of the Association discussed the history of Tennis programs in the community and discussed how everyone can work together to strengthen our current program working with the USTA (United States Tennis Association).

C. MSBA Leadership Conference – Overview – Fletcher provided an update on the Conference held in Minneapolis in January 2023.

D. Enrollment Update – Superintendent Fletcher provided an enrollment update.

E. School Board Recognition Month – February is National School Board Month. Board members were presented with Certificates of Appreciation.

F. Legislative Update – An update on Legislative items as they pertain to Education was given.

G. Flex Learning Update – An update was given on the current status of used Flex Learning Days due to inclement weather and the plan should all those days be used moving forward to be sure we meet the required hours of instruction.

X. Committee Reports:

Policy Committee – Beyer gave an update on a committee meeting held on February 7th where several of the school policies were reviewed and updated.

Facilities/Finance Committee – Zierke gave an update on the recent meeting and some upcoming projects and plans for completing those projects.

XI. Principal Reports:

Dressler – Attended the Elementary Principals Conference in Bloomington, MN. Better than B’s Recognition Breakfast was held on Friday, February 10th. Conferences are going to be held on March 2nd and March 9th. Kindness week is Feb 13-17th with a daily theme.

Shaffer – Attended a Secondary Principal conference in Minneapolis in January and had the opportunity to collaborate with surrounding Secondary Principals as well. A review of the EscapeTheVape event held in the PAC on January 30th. Conferences will take place on February 21st.

XII. Curriculum/Instruction Director: Principal Shaffer presented on Schmidt’s behalf. An update was given on the Math curriculum training provided by the Vendor and continuing to support the staff as they teach the new curriculum. Science curriculum discussions continue with staff to be sure that standards are met. NWEA K-7 testing window is concluding this week. MCA testing begins April 7th. ACT test is May 3rd.

The following notice from the Minnesota Department of Human Rights applies to all contractors:

“It is hereby agreed between the parties that Minnesota Statute, section 363A.36 and Minnesota Rules, parts 5000.3400 to 5000.3600 are incorporated into any contract between these parties based on this specification or any modification of it. A copy of Minnesota Statute 363A.36 and Minnesota Rules, parts 5000.3400 to 5000.3600 is available upon request from the contracting agency.”

“It is hereby agreed between the parties that this agency will require affirmative action requirements be met by contractors in relation to Minnesota Statute 363A.36 and Minnesota Rules 5000.3600. Failure by a contractor to implement an affirmative action plan or make a good faith effort shall result in revocation of its certificate or revocation of the contract (Minnesota Statute 363A.36, Subd. 2 and 3).”
