Pirates win, advance at State tourney
The Blue Earth Pirates had little trouble in their first game at the State Tournament last week as they cruised to a 7-1 win over the Glencoe Brewers.
The game was played on Aug. 22, in Gaylord. With the victory, the Pirates advanced to round two and faced the team from Forest Lake on Friday, Aug. 28 in Arlington.
Details on this game will be in next week’s Register.
A win on Friday would propel them to a game on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 1:30 p.m. against either Moorhead or Hanska. That game will be in Gaylord.
In the game against Glencoe, Blue Earth pitcher Lee Hodges went all nine innings, giving up the one run on four hits, while striking out 12 Brewers batters.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Todd Rasmussen scored on an error by the Glencoe second baseman. He had reached on a single and advanced on another Brewer error, this time by the third baseman.
Blue Earth exploded for five runs in the third inning.
Rasmussen started things off with a double. He scored on a single by Aaron Wendt.
After a couple of walks and passed balls got the Pirates on the bases, Hodges hit a double bringing in two runs.
Kane Malo also got a double in the inning, getting two RBI also.
After Glencoe scored their one run in the top of the fourth inning, Blue Earth countered with one of their own in the bottom of the inning.
