Tennis team nets victory

aThe Blue Earth Area girls tennis team accomplished something on Tuesday that they never did all of last season.

They got a conference win.

On Thursday, the Fairmont Cardinals defeated BEA 5-2 in conference action at Fairmont.

Against New Ulm the Bucs got a couple of wins in both singles and doubles.

Emily Slama started things off with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Trisha Johnson at No. 1 singles. Annika Johnson, at No. 2 singles, also notched a win, 6-1, 6-3 over the Eagles’ Hannah Stark.

The Bucs’ Sam Hogstad fell 6-4, 6-4 to Emily Steinman at No. 3 singles. Autumn Drake lost 6-4, 6-2 to Morgan Zollner at the No. 4 slot.

In doubles, senior Jessica Skaare paired up with freshman Abby Nimz to give BEA a hard fought win at No 1. doubles. The duo defeated New Ulm’s Leah Nelson and Meghan King 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Mackenzie Lein and Olivia Skaare defeated Anna Laitinen and Whitney Mielke at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-0.

At No. 3 doubles, BEA’s Karleigh Wolff and Cassidy Bartlett lost to Wiebke Newhaus and Kara Hendrickson, 6-2, 6-4.

BEA’s two wins against the Cardinals came at the No. 1 singles and second doubles team.

Emily Slama easily defeated the Cards Kelly Bloomgren — 6-0, 6-1 — in her singles match.

The No. 2 doubles duo of Olivia Skaare and MacKenzie Lein were — 6-1, 6-0 — winners over Allison Moeller and Lauralee Tromanhauser.

In other singles action, the Bucs Annika Johnson lost in a marathon match to Fairmont’s No. 2 player Sydney Ruen 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

At No. 3 singles, Sam Hogstad lost to the Cards Hayley Grefe – 6-1, 6-1 – while Autumn Drake dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Haleigh Gerhardt.

BEA’s first doubles team of Jessica Skaare and Abby Nimz won the first set 6-4, before Murphy and Fuhrman evened the match with a 6-3 win. The Cardinal duo won the match by winning the third set 6-3.

The Buccaneer girls tennis team ran into tough competition when they hosted Albert Lea on Monday, Sept. 14.

BEA only got wins from their top two singles players, and fell 5-2.

Emily Slama had little trouble at No. 1 singles, and defeated Taylor Nelson 6-0, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Annika Johnson got BEA’s other win, defeating Kellsie Dieser 6-3, 6-1.

Blaire Zierke lost to Sarah Wenum at No, 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 4 singles, the Bucs’ Ciarra Olson lost to Michelle Hartmann 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, Olivia Skaare and Jessica Skaare fell at the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, to Miki Pierson and Erika Blickenderfer.

No. 2 doubles Abby Nimz and Mackenzie Lein lost to Amy Bohlen and Jenna Sager, 6-4, 6-4. Autumn Drake and Karleigh Wolff were defeated at No. 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-3, to Zoe Hill and Kayla Hartmann.

BEA 4, Le Center 3

The Buccaneers fought their way to a close 4-3 win in Le Center on Saturday, Sept. 12.

BEA got three wins from singles players, and added one from their No. 1 doubles team, to seal the victory.

Emily Slama continued her winning ways in the No. 1 singles position, defeating Le Center’s Megan Kelly 7-6 (7-5), 6-0.

In the No. 2 singles contest, the Bucs’ Annika Johnson also had a close match against Jennifer Frederick, prevailing 6-2, 7-5.

Sam Hogstad, at No. 3 singles, downed Ashley Zimmerman in another tied battle, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Autumn Drake fell in the No. 4 singles spot, losing to Amanda Oswald, 6-4, 7-5.

Olivia Skaare and Abby Nimz paired up at No. 1 singles and got the fourth BEA win, defeating Taylor Murry and Carly McCabe, 6-0, 6-3.

At No. 2 doubles, Jessica Skaare and Blaire Zierke lost to Kellie Pfarr and Kayla Holicky, 6-2, 6-0. And at No. 3 doubles, Cassidy Bartlett and Karleigh Wolf of the Bucs lost to Brittany Fahrmkamp and Hannah Holicky, 6-4, 6-4.

St. James 6, BEA 1

As reported in last week’s Register, BEA lost to St. James on Sept. 10, by the score of 6-1.

Emily Slama notched the Buccaneer’s only win, defeating Paige Olson at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-5.

Other scores were:

Annika Johnson lost at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Olivia Skaare fell at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Jessica Skaare was defeated at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

Sam Hogstad and Mackenzie Lein lost at No. 1 doubles, 6-0. 7-5. Abby Nimz and Autumn Drake fell 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Blaire Zierke and Jordan Hanevik were defeated at No. 3 doubles, 6-0, 6-1.

The Bucs season record is now 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the South Central Conference. They will compete today in the Mankato West Invite.
