Bucs compete at mega meet

By Staff | Oct 5, 2009

The Blue Earth Area girls and boys cross country teams participated in perhaps the largest meet they will this year — the Milaca Mega Meet held Sept. 26.

The girls varsity squad finished 10th in the 20-team field, while the boys were 18th. Fairmont girls took fifth and the boys were fourth overall.

The meet featured competition among Class A, AA, AAA and AAAA teams.

It also is a unique meet in that runners may compete against others in their grade level; 7th through 10th grade.

Individual trophies are awarded in each race to first-place finishers through seventh place and ribbons are given for eighth through 25th-place.

Sophomores Courtney Grandgenett and Marissia Hagedorn finished 1-2 in their 4,000-meter race that had 103 participants.

Grandgenett’s winning time of 16:17 was eight seconds faster than Hagedorn’s.

The Buc boys seventh-grade team ran to an eighth-place showing.

Leading the way was Mike Ankeny with an eighth-place time of 12:29 in his 3,200-meter race.

Nick Lein was next at 46th place in 13:56, followed by Sam Kafka, 90th, 15:26; Ike Zebedee, 137th, 18:01; and Cage Johnson, 151st, 21:48.

In the girls varsity 4,000-meter race, Rylee Wagner was the first to finish with a time of 16:45 to grab 30th.

Mandy Warmka’s 17:24 was good enough for 63rd and LaNay Walker was close behind in 67th place with a time of 17:36.

Finishing 76th was Meghan Mittelstadt with 18:10, followed by Lindsey Ankeny in 80th place with 18:20 and Kelly Aukes was clocked in 20:19 to finish 119th.

For the boys varsity, Riley Holmseth covered the 5,000-meter course in 18:31 to place 55th overall.

The next Buc runner to cross the finish line was Aaron Wilhelmi in 18:37 to place 62nd.

Brandon Christians just missed being in the top 100, being clocked in 19:34 to claim the 102nd spot.

Finishing 135th was Jason Mertens with a time of 20:50 and Alvin Goraczkowski was only four seconds behind to take 137th.

Hans Kittleson was 154th in 22:09 and Jordan Leitzke’s time of 24:23 put him 166th overall.
