The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer tennis team got wins from all three of its doubles teams, plus their top two singles players, enroute to a 5-2 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals on Thursday.

The match was the start of the 2009 Section 2A Tennis Tournament. The victory means the No. 9 seeded Bucs will next face the top seeded Waseca Bluejays on Monday afternoon in Waseca.

If they win, they will next play on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

Last Thursday the Bucs got a win from senior Olivia Skaare and freshman Abby Nimz who paired up at No. 1 doubles. They defeated Kate Murphy and Megan Fuhrman, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, seniors Jessica Skaare and Mackenzie Lein beat Fairmont’s Casey Paris and Libby Humpal, 6-1, 6-3.

Eighth grader Ciarra Olson and seventh grader Karleigh Wolff notched a win at No. 3 doubles, defeating Allison Mueller and Lauralee Tromanhauser, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

No. 1 singles player for the Bucs, junior Emily Slama, won over Kelly Bloomgren, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, senior Annika Johnson defeated Sydney Ruen, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

It was another close match at No. 3 singles, with senior Sam Hogstad losing 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 to Hayley Grefe. Freshman Autumn Drake lost to Haleigh Gerhardt 6-0, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
