Bluejays avenge earlier loss to Bucs
The Waseca Bluejays put on an offensive show on Wednesday night on their home field, crushing the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers 60-20.
The Bluejays scored 30 points in both halves of the game, and amassed 670 yards of offense — 542 on the ground and 128 in the air.
The Bucs had 388 yards — 252 passing and 136 rushing.
The two teams combined for just over 1,000 yards of total offense in the game.
BEA had defeated Waseca 14-9 in the second game of the season on Sept 11. That low-scoring battle featured a stingy Buc defense. That was not to be the case on Wednesday.
The Bluejays scored a 65-yard touchdown on their first play from scrimmage in the game. It was the only scoring in the first quarter.
Waseca got a 5-yard touchdown run to start the second quarter, going up 12-0.
BEA struck back with a 78-yard scoring strike from Garrett Anderson to Nate Carr. With the extra point, the Bucs had cut the score to 12-7.
It didn’t take the Bluejays long to respond, going 67 yards in four plays and getting a 27-yard touchdown run. It wasn’t until there was 2:43 left in the game that Fairmont added a field goal to increase the lead to 17-6.
After a Buccaneer punt, Waseca went on a six play, 80-yard drive which culminated in a 28 yard passing touchdown. They led 24-7 with 5:32 left in the half.
Anderson again connected with Carr, this time for a 48-yard scoring strike. The six play, 80-yard drive made the score 24-14 in Waseca’s favor.
The Bluejays were not done scoring in the first half. They went on a 10 play, 75-yard drive and scored on a pass from the 8-yard line – with just 13 seconds left in the half.
That gave the ‘Jays a 30-14 half time advantage.
Waseca struck first in the third quarter, getting a touchdown on a 37-yard run.
BEA answered with a touchdown of their own. This time Anderson hit Nick Lee for a 42 yard TD pass completion with 6:35 left in the quarter.
The score was now 37-20, and the Bucs seemed to be staying in the game. But that proved to be a short-lived situation.
Waseca got two more scores in the final 40 seconds of the third quarter. They scored a 1-yard touchdown with 38 seconds left, then got a safety on the Bucs for two more points in the final seconds.
Score after three quarters was 46-20.
The Bluejays got two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, on runs of 43 and 49 yards.
The clock ran continuously in the final six minutes of the game, and the final score was 60-20 as time ran out.
Anderson led the Buccaneers with 112 yards rushing. He also was 13 of 31 passing for 252 yards with three TDs.
Carr had four catches for 150 yards and two TDs, while Lee had four catches for 58 yards and one score.
Waseca’s Sam Milbrett gained 313 yards rushing with six touchdowns – one through the air. In the game played earlier in the season in Blue Earth, the Bucs had limited Milbrett to just 85 yards rushing.
The Bucs’ record fell to 4-3 with the loss. This week they host St. Peter on Tuesday evening.
