Waseca sweeps Bucs in Section tennis action
The Waseca Bluejays tennis team had just too much firepower for the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers to overcome.
The Bucs fell 7-0 to the Bluejays in the quarterfinals of the Section 2A Girls Tennis Tournament on Monday.
The match was moved from the scheduled location in Waseca to an indoor court in Owatonna, due to snow and cold conditions.
Playing at No. 1 singles, Emily Slama had the Bucs best match of the afternoon. She took the Bluejay’s Danni Collins to three hard-fought sets, but lost 6-6 (7-2), 2-6, 6-3.
Slama had defeated Collins in a match in Blue Earth earlier in the season.
At No. 2 singles, Annika Johnson also had a battle with her Bluejay opponent, Bre Meircer. Johnson lost the first set 6-3, but bounced back to take the second 6-4. In the third, Meircer won 6-0.
Autumn Drake fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to Abby Collins. Ciarra Olson also lost, 6-0, 6-1, to Taylor Nelson at No. 4 singles.
Jessica Skaare and Olivia Skaare fell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles to Hannah Flor and Lexi Ulfers of Waseca. The Bucs’ Abbie Nimz and Mackenzie Lein lost 7-5, 6-3 to Tessa Kruger and Alicia Kroll at No. 2 doubles. Blaire Zierke and Jordan Hanevik fell to Katie Harvey and Abbe Hoehn, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
The loss ended the Buc’s team season with an overall 5-10 record. They were 2-3 in the South Central Conference.
Individual Section Tournament action starts this week on Tuesday and Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
