Gymnasts nab 2nd place

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer gymnastics team just edged out the New Ulm Eagles to take second place at the South Central Conference Meet on Friday, Feb. 12.

The Bucs scored a 134.55, just barely ahead of the Eagles’ 134.425. BEA hosted the meet in the Bucs’ home gym in Winnebago.

Martin County Area dominated the conference meet, winning it with a score of 144.625.

Waseca was in fourth with 132.75, St. James came in fifth with a 126.05 and St. Peter sixth at 122.575.

BEA was led by Julia Meyer who was third in all-around with a 34.75.

Meyer was fourth on the beam with a score of 8.65. She also was tied for sixth on the floor exercise with an 8.80.

Cassie Thompson had the second highest all-around score for the Bucs, but did not place in the top six in the conference. Her score was a 34.1.

Thompson took a a fifth place on the vault, scoring a 9.15. She was also sixth on the beam with an 8.4 score.

Meyer and Thompson, along with teammate Blaire Zierke, were all named to the SCC All-Conference team, and received certificates after the meet.

Zierke scored a 31.825 as an all-around total. Marissia Hagedorn had the Bucs third highest all-around score with a 33.4.

As a team, the Bucs scored a 36.025 on the vault, a 32.975 on the bars, a 31.75 on the beam and a 33.80 on the floor exercise.

Martin County Area, which is a pairing of Fairmont and Martin County West, took the top spots in every event.

They had the top two gymnasts’ scores on the bars, top four scores on the vault, top three scores on the beam, and top four on the floor. That gave them the top two scores in all-around, which went to Mattie Steen (37.675) and Linnea Erickson (36.9).
