Tennis nets three losses
The St. James Saints had too much firepower for the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys tennis team in a home match last Tuesday night.
The Bucs pulled out two close matches in singles, but lost the other contests, falling to the Saints 5-2.
The two Wilhelmi brothers got both of the Bucs’ wins, as Coach Colby Swanson changed his line-up a little in the match.
Aaron Wilhelmi, playing at No. 1 singles, took a 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 three set win from Charles Kolstad.
At No. 3 singles, Wade Wilhelmi defeated Matt Jurgens in a close 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 contest.
Riley Holmseth lost to James Rogers at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, eighth grader Brett Duit lost to Joel Carlson 6-3, 6-0.
The No. 1 doubles match between BEA’s Colan Surratt and Hans Kittleson and Matt Tucholte and Scott Mueller of St. James went to three sets. The Bucs fell 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
Alex Cleppe and Daniel Eckhardt lost at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-0 to Seth Jacoby and Nic Nelson. At No. 3 doubles, Hunter Myers and Eric Purvis lost 6-2, 6-4 to Shane Olson and Brandon Pearson.
The loss drops the Bucs season record to 2-4.
This week, BEA hosts Fairmont on Tuesday and Worthington on Friday.
Mound Westonka 5, BEA 2
The Buccaneer boys tennis team fell 5-2 to Mound Westonka last Monday.
The Bucs got wins from brothers Aaron and Wade Wilhelmi in two hard-fought matches.
Aaron Wilhelmi, playing at No. 1 singles, defeated Tanner Botts 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
At No. 3 singles, Wade Wilhelmi battled to a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win over Michael Foerster.
Riley Holmseth lost his No. 2 singles match 7-5, 6-4, to Arend Turner. At No. 4 singles, Brett Duit lost 6-1, 6-0 to Sander Lee.
The Bucs No. 1 doubles team of Colan Surratt and Hans Kittleson lost in a three set match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to Will Griffith and Cole Easley.
At No. 2 doubles, Alex Cleppe and Eric Purvis lost to Tyler Eckstrom and Nate Schermerhorn, 6-0, 6-1.
Hunter Myers and Daniel Eckhardt lost 6-2, 6-0 to Jeff Schermerhorn and Derek Swanson at No. 3 doubles.
Holy Family 5, BEA 2
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys tennis team only got two wins – from their No. 3 and 4 singles players – on the way to a 5-2 loss to Holy Family Catholic on Friday, April 23.
The match was moved from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter to the Mankato Tennis Center.
Wade Wilhelmi notched one of the two wins for the Bucs by defeating Ryan Menden at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Colan Surratt downed Tanner Towey by scores of 6-1, 6-2.
The Bucs’ Riley Holmseth, at No. 1 singles, lost 6-0, 6-0 to Conner Oberle. No. 2 singles player Aaron Wilhelmi lost 6-4, 6-2 to Niklas Schoenig.
All three Bucs doubles teams lost. At No. 1 doubles, Alex Cleppe and Hans Kittleson of BEA lost to Max Henke and Erik Elton by scores of 6-1, 6-2.
BEA’s No. 2 doubles team of Bret Duit and Hunter Myers lost 6-1, 6-0 to David Forbes and Keaton Luke. At No. 3 doubles, Daniel Eckhardt and Eric Purvis were defeated 6-1, 6-0 by Luke Smith and Sam Forbes.
