Tennis nets three wins

Despite extremely windy conditions on the Schroeder Courts in Blue Earth, the Buccaneer boys tennis team didn’t seem to be affected.

They handed the Fairmont Cardinals a 6-1 loss and upped their South Central Conference record to 2-1.

Aaron Wilhelmi, playing at No. 1 singles, set the tone for the night, winning a close exciting match that included two tie breakers.

Wilhelmi defeated Paul Miller 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).

At No. 2 singles, Riley Holmseth needed three sets to defeat the Cards’ Alex Kopischke. Holmseth lost the first set 4-6, but rebounded to win the next two by identical scores of 6-2.

Wade Wilhelmi, at No. 3 singles, downed Patryk Tusinski 6-2, 6-3. Brett Duit notched a win for the Bucs at No. 4 singles, beating Grant Becker 6-4, 6-3.

All three doubles teams won. Colan Surratt and Hans Kittleson started it off with a win at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-3, over Dylan VonBank and Shawn Patterson.

At No. 2 doubles, Alex Cleppe and Daniel Eckhardt defeated Luke Sanderfield and Skylar Hurd 6-1, 6-1. Eric Purvis and Hunter Myers continued the doubles sweep by winning 6-2, 6-3, over Nick Johnson and J.T. Viessleman at No. 4 doubles.

The win upped the Bucs overall record to 4-5 for the season.

This week the team travels to Waseca on Tuesday.

BEA 6, Albert Lea 1

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers won their second tennis match in as many days when they downed Albert Lea 6-1 on Friday, April 30.

BEA swept all four singles matches, with none of them very close.

Aaron Wilhelmi led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Kyle S. R. At No. 2 singles, Riley Holmseth defeated Brian Reindel, 6-0, 6-1.

Wade Wilhelmi also blanked his opponent, Trevor Herterdahl, 6-0. 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Brett Duit completed the sweep by defeating Aaron Woitas at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

At No. 1 doubles, Colan Surratt and Hans Kittleson notched a win over Noah Christopherson and Luke Thompson, 6-1, 6-3.

Alex Cleppe and Daniel Eckhardt won the closest match of the day. They downed Jeff Thorstad and Luke Cheever by scores of 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 doubles.

The Bucs’ Eric Purvis and Hunter Myers fell to Steven Kruen and Dyllan Engebretson at No 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-3.

The win upped the Bucs record to 3-5 overall, 1-1 in the conference. BEA 4, New Ulm 3

On Thursday, April 29, the Buccaneers got a big conference victory over the New Ulm Eagles. BEA won the meet 4-3.

The Bucs got three wins in singles play, and added one in doubles to pull out the close win.

Aaron Wilhelmi started things off with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Michael Maudal. At No. 2 singles Riley Holmseth defeated Michael Huber 6-3, 6-2.

Wade Wilhelmi continued the string with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles over Gage Vranich.

At No. 4 singles, Brett Duit lost to Alex King 6-1, 6-2.

BEA picked up their fourth win at No. 1 doubles when Colan Surratt and Hans Kittleson teamed up to defeat Cody Nelson and Landon Hagen 6-1, 6-1.

The other two doubles matches were both close.

At No. 2 doubles, Daniel Eckhardt and Alex Cleppe lost to Chris Dewanz and Doug Jones, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5.

It was also close at No. 3 doubles where Eric Purvis and Hunter Myers fell to Zack Jenson and Isaiah Isaiah 6-2, 0-6, 6-4.
