By Staff | Jun 21, 2010

The Blue Earth Pirates came up just one run short.

In a pitchers’ duel, the local team lost to the Kato Cubs 3-2 last Wednesday evening at the fairgrounds field in Blue Earth.

Neither team was able to get a run across the plate for the first six innings.

The Pirates got a run in the seventh inning, when Justin Schaible got on base with a double, and then scored on a Mat Wilner hit.

The Kato team got a run in their half of the eighth inning to tie up the game. The score came on a series of three singles in a row.

Then, in the bottom of the eighth, the Pirates took back the lead, going up 2-1, when T.J. Schmidtke came in to score, after getting on base with a walk.

Unfortunately, the Pirates couldn’t hold the lead.

The Cubs scored two runs in the ninth to win the game 3-2.

The Kato squad scored with a base on balls, followed by a fielder’s choice and two singles.

Schmidtlke pitched the first six innings with a strong performance, shutting out the Cubs in the scoring column, while giving up six hits, striking out one and walking four.

Cody Sukalski took the loss, coming in for three innings.

The Pirates were out-hit by the Cubs 11-7.

The loss put the Pirates record at 8-5.

This week the team will host Morristown on Wednesday, then host Sleepy Eye on Saturday, both games at 7:30 p.m. Then they will play Minnesota Lake on Sunday at 2 p.m. in another home game.
