B.E. VFW team ends season with 9-6 record

The Blue Earth VFW baseball team ended up third in the league tournament held in St. James recently.

The team opened against Fairmont, and lost a hard fought battle, 4-1.

The Blue Earth team went ahead in the second inning, 1-0, but gave up a run in the third that tied the game.

Fairmont scored three more in the fifth inning.

Jonah Pirsig pitched all seven innings.

In game two, the Blue Earth nine won a thriller over Wells, 10-9. Wells out hit Blue Earth 13-10 in the game.

Blue Earth was ahead 9-4 after five innings. Wells came back and scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie it.

Blue Earth got a run in the eighth inning to win the game.

Andrew Bell and David Franta combined to pitch the game.

Game three pitted Blue Earth against Mapleton, with Blue Earth winning 10-4.

Brady Anderson was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings.

Blue Earth had a 5-0 lead after the first inning, and added five more in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Mapleton had three of their four runs in the seventh.

The Blue Earth team had to face Fairmont again in their final game of the tourney, and lost 12-3.

Fairmont went on to take second place. New Ulm was the champion. Both advance to the District Tournament.

The Blue Earth VFW ended with a season record of 9-6, and third place in the league.

“We won two and lost two,” Coach Schmidtke says. “The guys did a good job, we had a lot of good hitting.”

In all, Blue Earth had 42 hits in the four games.
