Giants earn non-conference win over BEA
Blue Earth Area was defeated by the visiting Le Sueur-Henderson Giants 25-23, 25-23, 25-19 in non-conference volleyball action Sept. 2.
The Giants, who were state tournament participants last year, had to overcome a five-point Buccaneer lead late in the first game on their way to the three-game sweep.
Katie Krieger’s ace serve early in game one tied the score at 3-3. The Bucs took the lead on the next point and would build their margin to five points at 11-6.
The Giants would get to within two at 11-9 before an Ashley Olson kill – followed by an Olson service point – boosted the Bucs’ lead back to four points at 13-9.
However, it wasn’t long before the Giants had pulled to within one point of the Bucs, trailing 18-17. A side out followed by an Olson ace put the lead back to three points at 20-17.
By the time Olson was done serving the maroon and gold had increased their margin to five points, leading 22-17.
Unfortunately for the Bucs, the Giants would score eight of the next nine points and claim the victory in game one.
Game two saw LSH take an early 3-0 lead and never trail. The Giants had built their lead to seven points at 17-10 and seemed to be in control. However the Bucs showed their tenacity as they battled back.
A side out gave the Bucs their 11th point. Jenny Smith followed with four service points to narrow the Giant lead to 17-15.
The Giants regrouped and maintained a three to four point margin. It appeared they had things well in hand with a 24-20 lead that put them only a point away from the win.
There was no giving up for the home team and a Krieger stuff of a short Giant return cut the visitors lead to one point at 24-23. Unfortunately for the Bucs, the Giants were able to claim the next point and thus take a two games to zero lead heading into game three.
Game three again saw the Giants take an early lead. They would build the lead to five points at 10-5.
The closest the Bucs would get would be within three points at 11-8.
The Giants would then extend their lead back to five points and maintain at least a five point margin as they closed out the match with a 25-19 win.
Blue Earth Area’s record now stands at 1-1, with both games being non-conference contests.
