Section: Tennis season ends
The Buccaneer girls tennis season came to an abrupt end last Thursday in St. Peter at the Section 2A Individual Singles and Doubles Tournament.
Each team in the Section had two singles players, and two doubles teams, entered in the tourney.
Buc Coach Terry Barnes selected Emily Slama to play at No. 1 singles, a position she has held all season.
She got the No. 3 seed in the tournament brackets.
Slama won her first match on Thursday, defeating Kellie Schultz from Jordan, 6-0, 6-0.
Her next match was against the No. 2 player from St. Peter, Katie Hanson, and Slama lost 6-2, 6-3, bringing her season to an end.
Abby Nimz has played at No. 2 singles all year for BEA, but elected to play doubles for the Section, and selected No. 3 singles player Kelly Shortenhaus to be her partner.
The two played at No. 2 doubles, and won their first match over the No. 2 team from Sibley East, Hannah Larson and Breann Walsh, 6-2, 6-2.
They came back later in the day to play the St. Peter No. 1 team of Rachael Thompson and Calleigh Carlson, and lost, 6-2, 6-3. The Saints duo had been seeded No. 2 in the tournament.
With the No. 2 and No. 3 singles players involved in doubles play, the Bucs’ No. 4 singles player, Karleigh Wolff, had the opportunity to play at No. 2 singles in the tournament.
She drew Fairmont’s No. 1 singles player, Syd Ruen, and lost her first round, 6-0, 6-1. The loss knocked her out of contention.
Blaire Zierke and Autumn Drake have been teamed up at No. 1 doubles for the Bucs all season, and were again for the Section.
The Buccaneer duo were defeated in their first match of the day, falling to Fairmont’s No. 2 team of Kelly Blomgren and Aubrey Green, 6-2, 6-3.
