BEA rallies for SCC win at home

By Staff | Jan 24, 2011

Blue Earth Area wrestlers dominated the middle and upper weights for a 37-23 South Central Conference win over St. Peter on Friday, Jan. 14, in Blue Earth.

The Saints jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a decision at 103 pounds and a major decision at 112.

Senior 119-pounder Travis Hagedorn put three points on the scoreboard for BEA with an 8-4 win over Collin Thompson.

But, Dakota Haslip’s 9-1 major decision at 125 increased the Saints’ lead to 11-3.

“We were a little nervous going in. I knew St. Peter was very much improved. On paper we figured it was going to be a tough dual,” says Buc head coach Randy Wirtjes.

BEA got back on track with three straight wins.

Senior Jake Wirtjes, ranked No. 4 at 125 pounds in Class A, scored an 18-6 major decision at 130 pounds and Isaac Vasquez’s 5-1 win at 135 trimmed the visitor’s lead to 11-10.

Eighth-grader Jacob Johnson gave BEA its first lead with a pin in 4:56 at 140 pounds.

However, the Saints got a pin in the next match to go ahead, 17-16.

The Bucs rattled off five wins in a row, picking up much needed bonus points in three of the victories.

Senior 152-pounder Joe Franta controlled his match from the start to earn a 22-6 technical fall in 4:34.

Sophomore Carter Hanson, ranked sixth at 160 in Class A, won on a 13-4 major decision to make the score 25-17.

Devon Jahnke increased BEA’s lead to 31-17.

The Buc senior needed 3 minutes, 16 seconds to put his opponent’s shoulders to the mat.

Freshman Kysten Zierke hung on for an 8-7 win at 189 pounds and junior Josh Johnson’s reversal for two points to start the second period was the only scoring in his match.

“We’ve had five meets that have been canceled because of bad weather. The boys were itching to get back on the mat. It was a conference win, and that’s always good,” says Wirtjes.
