No. 1 Huskies win 43-21

By Staff | Jan 24, 2011

The Bucs’ Joe Franta shoots in for a single-leg takedown against William Baker of Jackson County Central.

If the Jackson County Central Huskies thought the Buc wrestling team was going to be a push over, it didn’t take long for them to find out otherwise.

BEA jumped off to a 12-0 lead, but the state’s No. 1 Class A team recovered for a 43-21 win Tuesday, Jan. 18, in Blue Earth and proved why they deserve their ranking.

“The boys knew JCC is a great team and respected them. But, they didn’t back down and wrestled hard. I was happy to see that and I’m pretty darn proud of them,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.

Alec Huber and Jesse Alleven got the Bucs rolling with pins at 103 and 112 pounds, respectively.

The Huskies answered with a pin, major decision and two decisions to take a 16-12 lead.

But, eighth-grader Jacob Johnson pinned his opponent in 2:24 and the home team held an 18-16 advantage.

The Bucs would win only one of the remaining seven matches. However, they were competitive in three of them.

Senior 152-pounder Joe Franta scored a big win in what might have been considered the “main event” of the night.

Franta remained undefeated and improved his season record to 13-0 with a last-second 5-4 decision over William Baker, who is ranked No. 3. in Class A.

Franta trailed 2-0 after the first period and 3-0 going into the final two minutes of wrestling.

With 55 seconds left in the match, Franta scored on an escape and added a takedown for two points to tie the match with 31 seconds left on the clock.

Baker took a 4-3 lead with an escape with 20 seconds remaining.

But, with seven seconds in the match, Franta got the winning takedown.
