Saints down Bucs, 40-20
The difference between winning and losing can be a fine line at times.
The Buc wrestling team found that out Thursday night when they were defeated 40-20 by Class A 11th-ranked St. James.
“They were able to win the close ones, and that was the difference,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.
The visiting Bucs won only four of the 14 matches, however, five of the losses were by a total of 11 points.
BEA spotted the Saints a 16-0 lead before putting points on the scoreboard.
Senior 130-pounder Jake Wirtjes, who is ranked No. 5, needed only 45 seconds to pin Taylor Berg to make the score 16-6.
The Saints responded by winning the next three matches and increased their lead to 30-6.
Senior Joe Franta and sophomore Carter Hanson put together back-to-back wins to cut St. James’ lead to 30-17.
Franta remained undefeated at 14-0 with a technical fall in 5:43 and No. 6-ranked Hanson improved his season record to 12-3 with pin in 2:20.
The Bucs would win only one of the remaining four matches, and it probably was a shocker to Saints fans.
Junior 215-pounder Josh Johnson never trailed in his match against No. 9-rated Dylan Wright.
Johnson took a 2-0 lead and built it to 4-0 with near fall points. But, Wright fought back to make the score 4-3.
In the final period, Johnson added an escape and takedown to clinch the win.
