Grapplers take 3rd at SCC Meet
After already having won the 2010-11 wrestling season dual meet crown, St. James easily won the South Central Conference tournament held Feb. 12, in Blue Earth.
The Class A No.12-ranked Saints claimed the title with 202.5 points, well ahead of second place Waseca with 161.5.
Blue Earth Area captured third place with 147.5 points.
“I thought we wrestled good in spots. We weren’t able to pick up points in some weights we could have. We have to win the close ones and it wasn’t our day. I thought we could have sneaked into second place,” says Head Coach Randy Wirtjes. “We can do better and we’ve got a week to work hard on it.”
The Bucs had three champions and three second-place finishers.
Joe Franta remained undefeated for the year.
Franta, ranked No. 6 in Class A, earned two decisions and a technical fall in the four-man 152-pound bracket.
The Buc senior defeated St. Peter’s Ashton Barlett 25-10, decisioned St. James’ Matt Westman 7-3 and downed New Ulm’s Cole Cihak 7-2.
Sophomore and No. 8-ranked Carter Hanson had a tougher time in his 160-pound title match. He edged St. Peter’s Tanner McLain, 1-0.
Senior Travis Hagedorn posted a 3-0 record at 119 pounds to claim first place.
Hagedorn decisioned St. Peter’s Collin Thompson 10-4, before pinning New Ulm’s Luke Cihak and St. James’ Isaac Carreon in the files.
BEA also had three second-place finishers.
At 130, senior Jake Wirtjes had a first-round pin over Jagger Hoffmann of New Ulm and then earned a 7-3 decision over Cody Olson of Fairmont to make the finals.
However, Tanner Pehrson of Waseca scored a 7-4 upset win over the No.6-ranked Wirtjes in the championship match.
Senior Devon Jahnke was runnerup at 171 pounds as Waseca’s Class AA No.1-ranked Brandon Pederson earned a fall in 1:34.
At 215 pounds, junior Josh Johnson dropped a 4-0 decision to Waseca’s Jacob Claybaugh to take second.
