Buc boys defeat Panthers 6-2 in season opener

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer baseball team got the 2011 season off to a good start.

BEA defeated New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva 6-2 in the season opener last Tuesday night.

The Bucs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first three innings. However, the Panthers were able to tie the game in the fourth inning by countering with two runs of their own.

BEA came right back with three runs in the fifth inning to take the lead back. They added an insurance run in the seventh and final inning.

Three Buccaneer pitchers saw action in the game.

Taylor Owen pitched four innings, giving up the two Panther runs on three hits. He struck out two and walked three batters.

Jonah Pirsig came in for two innings of relief pitching and picked up the win. He allowed two hits, struck out two and walked two.

Josh Amundson got the save with one inning of pitching. He struck out two batters.

Amundson also had the hot bat for the Bucs, going 3 for 3 at the plate. He also accounted for three RBI.

Joe Franta and Pirsig accounted for BEA’s other two hits in the game. Brady Anderson had two RBI, with Collin Nienhaus also bringing in a run.

Franta was up to bat four times in the game, and was brought home to score all four times.

The Bucs’ home opener is tonight, Monday, when they host the Knights of Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial.

Tuesday they host the USC Rebels, while Thursday the New Ulm Eagles will be in town.
