Tigers blast Bucs

By Staff | May 2, 2011

Belle Plaine erupted for 11 runs in the top of the third inning to break open a close game and defeat the Blue Earth Area Buccaneers in softball 14-2 last Monday afternoon.

The visiting Tigers scored in the top of the first inning. They combined a double and a single to take a 1-0 lead.

Blue Earth Area mounted a threat in the bottom half of the second but were unable to capitalize. The Bucs loaded the bases with two outs but Belle Plaine was able to work out of the jam to maintain their 1-0 advantage.

Then came the Tigers’ 11 run third inning. Their lead-off batter reached on an error, stole second and scored on a hit. The runner advanced to second on another error. Consecutive singles plated the second run and put runners on first and second. A perfectly executed bunt loaded the bases. The next batter doubled to make it 5-0. Another single brought home two more runs and gave the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

Belle Plaine continued to get hits and put a punctuation mark on the inning with a 2-run blast over the fence in right-center field to cap off their 11-run inning and give them a 12-0 lead.

Meanwhile the Bucs were making good contact and hitting some line drives but hitting them right at the fielders.

The maroon and gold finally broke through with a run in their bottom half of the fourth to break the Tigers’ shut-out. Evie Leland singled to right field and advanced to third base on passed balls. She came in to score on a Lindsey Ankeny bunt to get the Bucs on the board.

Ciarra Olson scored for the Bucs in the bottom of the fifth, reaching on an error by the shortstop.
