Locals win Giant Days 10K

By Staff | Jul 17, 2011

The Giant Days 10K offers two chances for runners in both the female and male categories to leave with hardware.

One set of trophies are awarded to the first overall female and male winner. And another set of trophies goes to the fastest female and male Blue Earth residents.

In the sixth running of the Giant Days 10K, both trophies went to the same runners. Blue Earth athletes Daniel Murray and Suzie Olson won the race and they were also the fastest runners from Blue Earth.

Former Blue Earth Area and Iowa State track and field athlete Daniel Murray won the male division in 37:45.

Blue Earth resident and Ironman triathlete Suzie Olson won the female category in 42:53

Organizers joked that next year Murray will be required to wear a shirt that reads follow me printed on the back. The talented runner has won the race the past four years.

Chris Detert was second overall just 4 minutes behind Murray.

The 10k race makes one loop around Unity Trail and then exits the fairgrounds. Runners head South towards downtown Blue Earth and continue to the swimming pool.

Runners trek cross country as the course loops around the pool and heads back to the fair grounds.

To close out the race, one last loop is made on Unity Trail before runners cross the finish line.

Held in conjunction with the 10K race is a two mile run, 1/2 mile kids run and two mile walk.

The two mile run and two mile walk made two laps around Unity Trail before runners and walkers crossed the finish line.

160 runners and walkers participated in the four events.
