Netters eliminated in Section individual play
None of the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer tennis players survived the first day of action at the Section 2A Tennis Singles and Doubles Tournament on Thursday, Oct. 13.
In singles action, Buccaneer eighth grader Karli Olsen won her first match of the day over Kori Lowe of LCCML in a long battle, 6-7(5), 7-6(5), 10-3.
Olsen lost her next match 6-0, 6-1 to Becca Hager of Maple River.
BEA’s other singles entrant, 10th grader Lindsey Prokop, lost 6-3, 6-2 to ninth grader Linsey Thisius of United South Central. Thisius lost her next match 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to Morgan Setterman of Sleepy Eye.
USC’s other singles entrant, Julia Stenzel, a 10th grader, won her first match 6-1, 6-1 over Sara Mootz of Le Sueur-Henderson. She lost her next match 6-1, 6-0 to Katie Hanson of St. Peter.
In doubles action, Buc juniors Abby Nimz and Autumn Drake won their first match against Justin Lloyd and Victoria Read of Janesville, 7-6(5), 6-2.
The duo moved on but were eliminated in the next round, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Rachael Thompson and Calleigh Carlson of St. Peter.
BEA’s other doubles team of ninth graders Kaitlyn Olsen and Karleigh Wolff fell 6-3, 6-4 to Britany Nase and Michaela Hislop of Maple River. Olsen and Wolff had been seeded eighth in the section.
USC’s doubles team of junior Monica Bye and eighth grader Kia Legred lost 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 to Emily Otto and Cassie Schneider of Belle Plaine in the opening round.
USC’s other duo, Robin Staloch, a senior, and Claire Christian, a sophomore, received the No. 6 seed and won their first match 6-0, 6-3 over Maggie O’Malley and Beth Steinborn of LCCML.
The pair moved on and won their next match 6-3, 6-0 over Libby McCoy and Elle Hammes of LSH.
The USC duo were the only players from Faribault County to survive the first day of tennis play and advance to the semi-finals.
