USC girls 6th, Mantor earns All-State

It was a Top 10 finish for the United South Central girls cross country team at the Class A team State Meet held Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

The Rebels tallied 203 points to place sixth in the 16-team field.

Section 2A foe and champ Waseca finished a spot ahead of USC with 154 points. St. Cloud Cathedral won the title with 94.

“I thought we ran really, really well. We finished where I hoped we would, in the top 10. But, in my years of coaching I’ve learned you never know what to expect,” says 48-year veteran coach Kent Viesselman.

USC was led by sophomore Emily Mantor, who finished 25th in the individual competition with a time of 15:30.8 to gain All-State honors.

Junior Hannah Goemann also competed in the individual competition and took 46th in 15:49.5.

For team scoring, Mantor took 15th and Goemann was 28th.

Eighth-grader Bethany Koziolek took 35th in the team competition and 63rd overall with a time of 16:06.6.

The next Rebel to complete the 4,000-meter course was senior Andree Escherich 81st overall (48th team) in 16:19.3.

Amber Klein was next at 121st (77th team) with a time of 17:12.1.

Senior Abby Trio was clocked in 18:04.6 to place 146th overall (101st team) and placing 149th overall (104th team) was eighth-grader Tikvah Schwartz with a time of 18:24.6.

There were 156 runners that finished the girls race.

Viesselman says next season won’t be the same without seniors Escherich and Trio.

“They’ve been on the team for five years. It will seem different,” says Viesselman. “Normally by the time a girl is a senior their times aren’t as good. But, those two had their best season,” Viesselman says.

In the boys 5,000-meter race, USC’s lone qualifier for the individual competition Dylan Baumann placed 50th overall among 150 runners.

It was Baumann’s first time competing in a State Meet.

“Dylan ran how I thought he would. He ran well and it was a good way to close out his career,” says Viesselman.
