Bucs corral Mavericks, 53-48

By Staff | Jan 8, 2012

Clutch baskets down the stretch helped lead the Blue Earth Area boys basketball team to a 53-48 victory over Martin County West.

BEA’s Brady Anderson scored six points in the final four minutes and teammate Sam Lee powered in four to help seal the non-conference win.

After a MCW 3-pointer by Mitchell Sitzmann – closing the BEA lead to one – Anderson’s first basket in the waning moments was a momentum changer.

The 6-foot-1 point guard corralled the ball and went coast to coast for a layup.

During the teams next possessions, BEA traded a free throw for a field goal to extend their lead to 47-43. This time, it was Lee who secured a rebound and put back a layup.

The Mavericks kept their hopes alive on their next possession when Sitzmann hit another three to close within one with 2:44 remaining.

BEA countered with two layups of their own. One from Anderson and another from Lee on a dazzling post move.

MCW refused to quit and after a layup, they created a chance to tie the ball game with 18 seconds remaining. The 3-point attempt was off the mark and the Mavericks were forced to send Anderson to the line.

BEA’s reliable point guard sank both free throws and the Bucs left Trimont with a five point win.

The game was close the entire way with BEA establishing the largest lead of the night at seven when Brandyn Olsen hit a three to give the Bucs a 31-24 edge. The Mavs largest advantage was by five, 13-8.

BEA finished the evening with four players in double figures.

Dallas Barslou led the balanced scoring attack putting in 12 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Barslou kicked off the game with a 3-pointer and remained the primary option on offense for a majority of the half.

Anderson was next in line thanks to his late game heroics. He finished the night with 11 points.

Brandyn Olsen was the team’s most consistent scorer ending the night with 10 points. Olsen scored five in the first half and five in the second.

Lee also poured in 10 points, scoring eight of them in the second half.

The win moves the Bucs overall record to 2-6 on the season.

BEA played St. James on Friday after the Register’s deadline. The Bucs were looking for their first South Central Conference win of the year.

Up next on the schedule will be a Jan. 12 showdown against New Ulm. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Blue Earth Area High School.
