Grapplers post two wins at quad

By Staff | Jan 15, 2012

The Bucs won two of three dual meets at a quadrangular hosted Jan. 6 by New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva.

BEA had little trouble with St. Clair, winning six matches by forfeit enroute to a 57-15 victory.

The Bucs needed some heroics in the upper weights against Triton to pull out a 38-35 win.

A forfeit at 160 trimmed Triton’s lead to 25-20.

But, a forfeit and a major decision and the Bucs trailed 35-20 with three matches remaining.

Kysten Zierke kept BEA’s hopes alive, pinning his opponent in just 28 seconds at 195 pounds.

Senior 220-pounder Josh Johnson, ranked No. 2 in Class A, earned a fall in 1:34 to get the Bucs within three points, 35-32.

A decision by Buc heavyweight Martin Granados and the outcome would have to be decided using tiebreaker criteria.

But, Granados had other ideas.

The Buc freshman pinned his opponent in 53 seconds for a 38-35 team win.

Against NRHEG, it was a battle between two squads listed in the “Lean and Mean” category of Class A team rankings in The Guillotine wrestling publication.

Both teams won seven matches, but the Panthers used five pins to collect 30 of their team’s points to claim a 36-30 victory.

“Their lineup is pretty solid with very few holes. We gave up too many pins,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.

The Bucs won the first three matches with two decisions and a fall to build a 12-0 lead.

NRHEG responded with four straight pins to take a 24-12 lead.

David Franta (152) and Class A No. 4-ranked Carter Hanson (160) recorded back-to-back decisions to cut the margin to 24-18.

The Panthers’ Seth Petranek, ranked No. 2 in Class A at 182 pounds, clinched a win for his team with a 9-2 decision over Kysten Zierke.

BEA’s Ryan Gronewald (106), Alec Huber (113) and David Franta (152) all went 3-0 in the matches they wrestled.

The Bucs overall season record is now 9-4.
