The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer girls basketball team could not overcome a talented St. Peter Saints squad on Friday night, Feb. 3.

The Bucs never led in the game and lost 59-42, giving the South Central Conference crown to the Saints.

“The girls had another tough night shooting the ball,” Coach Al Cue says.

BEA shot just 24 percent from the floor, making 12 of 51 field goal attempts.

Their free throw shooting kept them alive in the game, as they sank 17 of 20 from the charity stripe for an 85 percent rate.

“The team really played with great intensity,” Cue says. “Their defense kept them within reach most of the night, but we just could not make that ‘big’ shot.”

The Saints jumped out to a 5-0 lead and the Bucs were never able to climb back in and tie or go ahead.

BEA did get close, trailing by two at 7-5 after Krista Hassing and Camille Driscoll each made 2-point baskets.

But the Saints were able to go on several unanswered point runs to maintain a good lead.

With the score 15-12, St. Peter rattled off six straight to go up 21-12.

BEA trailed by eight, 25-17, at the end of the first half.
