Bucs take 3rd at SCC Meet

St. James made a clean sweep, winning the South Central Conference (SCC) wrestling meet held Feb. 11 in Fairmont.

The Saints took first place with 198.5 points, adding to their SCC dual-meet championship.

It was a close finish for second place with St. Peter tallying 151 points, just ahead of Blue Earth Area with 148.

“I thought we’d have a chance for second. I knew it was going to be close and we had to wrestle well,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.

The Bucs advanced six wrestlers to the finals, but none unable to win a title.

Luke Schavey dropped a close 9-8 decision to Collin Thompson of St. Peter in the 132-pound finals.

Tanner Pehrson of Waseca won his fourth SCC title with a 7-1 win over Jesse Alleven at 138 pounds.

BEA’s 195-pounder Kysten Zierke lost 1-0 in title match against St. Peter’s Dylan O’Connor.

Also losing a heart-breaker was 160-pounder Carter Hanson.

Luke Schmit scored a winning takedown in overtime for a 7-5 win over Hanson.

Heavyweight Martin Granados lost 6-4 to Victor Torres of St. James, and Jacob Claybaugh of Waseca earned an 8-0 major decision over Josh Johnson at 220 pounds.

Section team meet

The Bucs earned the No. 5-seed in the Section 2A team championships held Feb. 18 in Mapleton.

In the opening round, BEA (19-9) wrestled No. 4-seed New Richlando-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva (15-5), a team they lost to 36-30 in the season.

The winner advanced to the semis to face either Jackson County Central, Blooming Prairie or Southland. JCC is 19-3 and ranked No. 1 in Class A.

In the bottom bracket, United South Central (17-8) took on Medford (6-8) in the opening round, while St. Clair (5-11) faced Maple River (15-1). The two winning teams met in the semi-finals.
