Bucs earn split, lose to USC

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer baseball team played a rare doubleheader Tuesday night and split the two games with the two games with the St. Peter Saints.

BEA claimed the win in the first game, 6-0, but fell to St. Peter 12-8 in the second.

In game one, the Bucs got on the scoreboard with two runs when Zac Bartlett and Andrew Bell both crossed the plate in the third inning.

BEA exploded for four more runs in the fourth inning for their 6-0 lead.

Blaine Hougen, Carter Hanson, David Franta and Bartlett also scored in the inning.

Brandyn Olsen and Bell combined for the shutout.

Olsen pitched four innings, allowing four hits and striking out six.

Bell came in for three innings and allowed one hit while striking out two. Both pitchers issued one base on balls.

Seth Anderson had the big bat at the plate for BEA, going 3 for 4, including a double.

The Bucs had total of eight hits. Olsen, Hougen, Hanson, Bartlett and Christian Haugh had one hit each.

St. Peter 12, BEA 8

The Saints took control of game two early, plating seven runs in the second inning.

Both teams scored three runs in the third inning, making the score 10-3.

BEA’s three runs included a 2-run home run from Jonah Pirsig that first got the Bucs on the scoreboard. Eric Spellman and Zac Bartlett scored in the inning.

The Saints managed one more run in both the fourth and fifth innings for a 12-3 lead.

BEA attempted a rally in the sixth inning, and brought in five runs, cutting the lead to 12-8.

Seth Anderson, Blaine Hougen, Spellman, Bartlett and David Franta all came in to score in the inning.

The Bucs had six singles in the big inning.

In the end, the rally fell short with BEA losing the twilight second game.

Hanson led the Bucs at the plate, going 3 for 4. Spellman was 2 for 2, including a double. Franta was 2 for 3 and Pirsig 2 for 4.

Pirsig took the loss, pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits.

The Bucs traveled to Fairmont on Saturday, May 26, and took on the Cardinals in the opening game of the Section 3AA Tournament.

USC 7, BEA 4

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers took an early lead, but wound up losing 7-4 to the United South Central Rebels Friday evening in Blue Earth.

USC plated two runs in the opening inning for the first lead of the game, 2-0. Jason Huper hit a double after Shawn Ralman and Cole Stenzel had hit singles.

BEA came back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first inning to cut the lead in half.

Jonah Pirsig’s single knocked in Brandyn Olsen.

The Bucs added two more runs in the bottom of the third when David Franta and Olsen both crossed the plate for scores.

That put BEA up 3-2 over USC.

BEA’s Christian Haugh came home to score in the fourth when David Franta connected on a double. The Bucs lead went to 4-2.

But, USC came right back in the top of the fifth to score two runs, then added three more in the seventh to take the commanding 7-4 lead and the win.

The Bucs had three pitchers take the mound.

Franta went five innings and gave up four runs on 10 hits, striking out five and giving up no walks.

Zac Bartlett came in for 1 1/3 innings and took the loss. He gave up three runs on three hits, struck out two and walked two.

Olsen finished up by pitching 2/3 inning, giving up no runs or hits.

The Rebels outhit the Bucs 13 to nine.

Trey Allis and Huper both were 2 for 3, while Ralman, Lucas George, Cole Stenzel and David Stenzel were all 2 for 4 for the Rebels.

For the Bucs, Pirsig was a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate. Haugh was 2 for 3 and Olsen was 2 for 4.

Franta, Olsen and Pirsig all knocked out a double during the game.
