Netters down Mavs, Saints

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer girls tennis team pulled off a close 4-3 win over the St. Peter Saints on Thursday night to notch their fifth win of the season and their first conference victory.

The Bucs got wins from three of their singles players and added one doubles team victory to defeat the Saints.

At No. 2 singles, Lindsey Prokop defeated Mallory Malecek 6-3, 6-3.

Anikka Wilhelmi downed her Saint opponent, Michalea Meyer, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Kaitlyn Olsen defeated Aliza Doherty 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 singles spot.

Adding to the Buccaneers’ four match wins was the No. 3 doubles team of freshman Paige Darrington and senior Autumn Drake. They played a Saints freshman/senior duo, Karly Marer and Katie Sundquist, winning 6-4, 6-0.

The Bucs No. 1 singles player, Karleigh Wolff played a long, hard-fought second set, but fell to her Saints opponent, Calleigh Carlson, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

At No. 1 doubles, Natali Fellows and Karli Olsen lost to Morgan Schwarz and Maggie Nelson in a close match, 7-5, 6-1.

The Bucs No. 2 doubles team lost by the identical 7-5, 6-1 score. Abby Nimz and Aeli Olson were defeated by Rachel Huber and Val Bresnahan.

Storm clouds, lightning and rain caused a delay during the first singles matches.

The match was moved indoors and completed at the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter.

The Bucs overall record goes to 5-1, while they are now 1-0 in the South Central Conference.

BEA 6, MCW 1

The Blue Earth Area girls tennis team notched their fourth win of the young season with a big 6-1 win over Martin County West (MCW) on Thursday, Aug. 30 in Blue Earth.

It was third straight match the Buccaneers won by the lop-sided 6-1 margin.

BEA’s four singles players only allowed the Mavericks to win six games while racking up 48 themselves.

At No. 1 singles, BEA’s Karleigh Wolff notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kelci Russenberger.

Lindsey Prokop defeated Megan Suter 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Buccaneer teammate Anikka Wilhelmi blanked Tori Russenberger 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Kaitlyn Olsen downed Bailey Ebeling of the Mavericks 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot.

The Bucs’ ninth grade duo of Natali Fellows and Karli Olsen defeated the Maverick senior pair of Kaleigh Russenberger and Jennifer Hagen 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

At No. 2 doubles, BEA’s Abby Nimz and Aeli Olsen lost their match to Shawna Dressen and Emily Lawrence 6-2, 6-3.

The most contested match of the day was at No. 3 doubles, where BEA’s Paige Darrington and Autumn Drake fought for a three-set win over Ily Schlenk and Alisa Russenberger. The Buc pair prevailed 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The win boosted the Bucs record to 4-1 for the season.

Up this week the Bucs head to Albert Lea on Monday, USC on Tuesday and then will host St. James on Thursday.
