By Staff | Oct 8, 2012

The No. 2-seeded Blue Earth Area Buccaneers won six of seven matches to crush the No. 7 seed, Belle Plaine, in Section 2A quarter final action Thursday night in Blue Earth.

But, despite the apparent lopsided score, the match was closer than Buc head coach Terry Barnes would have liked.

All three BEA doubles teams lost their first set. So did the Buccaneers’ lone conference champion, Kaitlyn Olsen, at No. 4 singles.

“We have to turn this around,” Barnes said during the match on a very cold, windy afternoon. “Or it could get very close and come down to the final match.

The Bucs did turn it around and now will advance to the semi-finals, playing on Monday night at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

Against the Tigers on Thursday, all four singles players came out with wins.

At No. 1 singles, Karleigh Wolff defeated Ashley Morrison, 6-4, 6-3.

Lindsey Prokop easily downed Lindsey Vennie at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

The Bucs Anikka Wilhelmi won a long battle in her first set at No. 3 singles, but eventually prevailed 7-6 (7-4) over Ireland Lambrecht. Wilhelmi came back to crush Lambrecht 6-1 in set two to take the win.

Kaitlyn Olsen, fresh from winning a conference title, lost her first set 6-1 to Kate Savage at No. 4 singles. But, Olsen regrouped and came back strong, winning the next two sets 6-0, 6-1.

The Bucs’ single loss came at No. 1 doubles when Karli Olsen and Natali Fellows could not overcome Allison Stolee and Jane Schneider and fell 6-4, 6-4.

Aeli Olson and Paige Darrington were in a long three-set battle at No. 2 doubles.

The Buc duo downed Sophie Brazil and Jamie Reed 1-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

Likewise Beka Krussow and Kali Viland had their No. 3 doubles match go to three sets also. They defeated Meghan Gavin and Kaisa Hallgren 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 7-5.

The win put the Buccaneers’ overall season record at 11-5. They ended 3-2 in the South Central Conference.
