Blue Earth Area wrestlers got their season under way at the Park Wolfpack Duals held Dec. 8 in Cottage Grove.

The Bucs went 3-1, only losing to Cannon Falls/Randolph, 39-30, in the second round.

BEA outlasted Tartan 37-34 in the opening matchup, defeated host Park, 42-33, and cruised past Stillwater 49-15 in the final round.

“It was nice to wrestle as a full team. Our conditioning was pretty good, but we’ve worked real hard in practice,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.

Winning all of their four matches were David Franta at 160 and 170-pounder Carter Hanson.

Franta had two pins, a tech fall and major decision for his wins.

Hanson, who’s rated No. 8 at 170 pounds in Class A, collected a decision, pin, major decision and tech fall for victories.

Five wrestlers were 3-1.

At 126, Alec Huber had two pins and a decision, while 152-pounder Luke Schavey had one pin, major decision and a decision.

Chris Ramos collected two wins by decision and one via a fall at 195 pounds, and Kysten Zierke, who is ranked No. 7 at 195, recorded two pins and a decision at 220.

Gus Phillips, ranked No. 9 at 160 pounds, recorded a major decision and decision among his victories.

Mike Ankeny posted a 2-2 record for the day with two pins at 138 pounds.

At heavyweight, No. 10-ranked Martin Granados was 2-1 with two pins.
