Blue Earth Area picked up a South Central Conference win on the road against Fairmont/Martin County West Thursday night.

The Bucs won nine of 14 matches, six by a pin, to defeat the Red Bulls 49-23.

“I’m happy with how we did. Our lower weights really wrestled well. All of our guys wrestled hard,” says head coach Randy Wirtjes.

“If the kids go out and do their very best, that’s all you can ask,” he adds.

Zach Buseman gave BEA an early 6-0 lead with a pin in 5:19 at 106 pounds.

Back-to-back victories by Collin Steuber and Class AA No.1-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz put FMT/MCW ahead 11-6.

Alec Huber cut the Red Bulls’ lead to 11-9 with a 4-3 decision at 126-pounds.

BEA’s 132-pounder Jordan Stelter put the Bucs ahead for good with a pin in 3:05.

Mike Ankeny followed with a fall at 138 pounds in 1:34 and 145-pounder Jesse Alleven added a technical fall in 5:38.

Red Bulls Joe Weber, rated No. 10 at 152 pounds, put six points on the scoreboard with a fall in 5:00.

But, the Bucs would win four of the next six matches to secure a victory.

David Franta earned a technical fall in 5:40 at 160 and Class A No.7-rated Carter Hanson needed just 25 seconds to pin his opponent.

Gus Phillips, ranked No. 8 at 170 pounds, followed with a quicker pin in only 20 seconds to make the score 43-17.

BEA’s final win came at 220 pounds when Kysten Zierke – rated No. 7 at 195 – put his opponent’s shoulders to the mat at the 5:17 mark.
