Call it an off night.

Blame it on cold shooting and turnovers and then regroup and move on.

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers boys basketball team will have to do all of that after traveling to Mapleton and getting beat by the Maple River Eagles 65 to 37 last Monday night.

The Class AA No. 5-ranked Eagles soared to a big 13-point advantage at the end of the first half, 36-23. They then more than doubled BEA’s scoring in the second half, 29-14.

The Bucs could get no players scoring into double figures in the game.

Dallas Barslou led the Bucs with nine points, while teammate Colin Squiers added eight, Isaac Darrington seven, Luke Monson six and Brandyn Olsen five.

Squiers was a perfect 2 of 2 from the three-point line and 2 of 2 from the free-throw line. Darrington was also a perfect 3 of 3 from two-point range and 1 of 1 from the charity stripe.

But, as a team, the Bucs were out-gunned when it came to shooting from the floor. The Eagles took more shots and made a lot more.

While BEA sank 4 of 15 threes to nearly match Maple River’s 5 of 13 long range shots, it was from the two point area that they had difficulty.

The Bucs were 9 of 20 shots (45 percent) while the Eagles were 23 of 37 attempts (62 percent).

BEA was not bad at the line, making 7 of 10 free throws (70 percent) while Maple River was just 4 of 12 (33 percent).

The Eagles were led by Zach Krengel with 14 points and 11 rebounds

Turnovers were a big deciding factor in the game as well. The Bucs committed 14 while the Eagles only had five.

Both teams grabbed 20 rebounds. Monson led BEA with six.

This week the Bucs host St. Peter on Monday in a game postponed from Jan. 31, then travel to St. James on Tuesday, returning to host New Ulm on Friday.
