Despite the fact that the season is long over, four members of the Blue Earth Area High School wrestling team and one from United South Central High School received additional honors recently.

And this time it was not just for their prowess on the mat, but their skills in the classroom.

Kysten Zierke, Carter Hanson, David Franta and Jesse Alleven were named to the 2013 edition of The Guillotine wrestling newsmagazine’s Academic All-State lists.

In fact, the Buccaneers landed one wrestler on each of the magazine’s four awards lists. They were the only team to do so.

Zierke was named to the first-team all-academic list, Hanson to the second-team list, Franta to the third-team list and Alleven was named to honorable mention list.

USC’s Dylan Herman was also named to the second-team all-academic list.

The honorees must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, minimum of 15 varsity matches, winning record of at least 60 percent and be a junior or senior.

Wrestlers on the first team all placed fourth or higher at the State Tournament this year, averaged 40 wins each and averaged a GPA of 3.85.

Here is a run down on the honored Buccaneers and Rebel.

Kysten Zierke

First Team

Zierke was the Class A 195-pound runner-up this year at the state tournament. He is a two-time state entrant.

Zierke had an impressive season record of 28-2. His current record is 76-33.

The BEA junior also carries a 3.9 GPA.

His honors and achievements include two-time conference champion, three year letterwinner, member of two MWCA academic team state champions, all-conference football, member of the Class 3A state championship football team (quarterback/linebacker), Peer Helper, National Honor Society and DARE member.

Zierke’s future plans are undecided, but will include football.

Carter Hanson

Second Team

The Buccaneer senior took sixth place at the state tournament this past season.

Hanson was one of only 11 of the state honorees to carry a 4.0 GPA. There were 131 wrestlers on the four lists.

His season win/loss record for this past year was 36-7.

David Franta

Third Team

The Buccaneer junior wrestled at 152 pounds this past season. His win/loss record was 29-9.

Franta carries a 3.96 GPA.

Jesse Alleven

Honorable Mention

The Buccaneer senior wrestled at 138 pounds for BEA this past season. His win/loss record was 28-14 for the year.

Alleven carried a 3.82 GPA in his studies.

Dylan Herman

Second Team

Herman was the Rebel’s 132-pounder this past season.

The USC junior placed third at state and had a season win/loss record of 37-4.

He carries a GPA of 3.34.
