BE VFW loses to New Ulm Gold
The Blue Earth Area VFW team ran into a buzz saw in their first game on Thursday at the VFW District Tournament in Green Isle.
The local team was blitzed by the New Ulm Gold team 20-2.
“It was a really rough outing for us,” Coach Jeff Bell says. “Now we need to refocus on the next game.”
Because it is a double elimination format, the Blue Earth team needs to win each game the rest of the weekend.
They were set to play either Chaska or Hutchinson on Friday, depending on which team lost their game on Thursday. That game was scheduled to be played in Arlington.
After that, the VFW team will play on Saturday and Sunday, if they can keep winning.
Against New Ulm Gold on Thursday, the Blue Earth team grabbed an early lead by scoring a run in the top half of the first inning.
Their 1-0 lead was short-lived, however, as New Ulm Gold came back and scored 12 runs in the bottom of the first.
Blue Earth had five hits in the game and committed four errors.
“That game is behind us,” Coach Bell says. “We are hoping today (Friday) to have better luck.”
