Pirates head to State

After losing both of their last round Region playoff games, the Pirates are still headed to the State Tournaments.

Blue Earth will be playing as the No. 3 (C) seeded team from Region 4. Their first game will be against Winsted in Maple Lake on Aug. 17 at 4 p.m.

In the Region, the Pirates first took on Lake Crystal last weekend. They played in Waterville on Friday night.

The game was close in score and the winner wasn’t determined until a tie-breaking run was scored in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Blue Earth started off the game with a double by TJ?Stallman. TJ Schmidtke followed with a single. Both crossed home plate in the first inning for the first two runs of the game.

The bottom of the inning ended after the first three Lake Crystal batters.

In the third inning, Lake Crystal scored two runs creating a tie game, 2-2.

The Pirates didn’t let the tie last long as Trent Sonnicksen made it home to regain the lead, 3-2.

The fifth inning gave the Pirates’ opponents the momentum they needed. They brought in three runs, quickly passing Blue Earth’s score, 5-3.

Lee Hodges and Bob Olson crossed the plate in the seventh and tied the score again.

Neither team could produce another run in the next couple of innings, putting the game into extra innings.

It was in the 12th inning that a Lake Crystal batter hit a double and was brought home by a teammate for the win, 6-5.

Lake Crystal went on to play Cannon Falls the next day and are the No. 2 (B) seeded team.

Stallman was first in the batting lineup for the Pirates. He was 2 for 6 batting and scored one run.

Schmidtke was 1 for 7 hitting and scored one run and had one RBI.

Olson was 3 for 6 at bat and he scored one run.

Hodges was 2 for 3 batting. He scored one run and had one RBI.

Sonnicksen wrapped up the batting order. He was 2 for 5 and scored one run.

Brandyn Olsen and Cody Sukalski each had one RBI.

Hodges pitched nine innings for Blue Earth. He allowed five runs, 11 hits and one base on balls. He also had seven strikeouts.

Sukalski pitched 2 1/3 innings. He allowed one run, three hits and had two strikeouts.

Then the next day, the Pirates played Cannon Falls who is now the No. 1 seeded team in Region 4.

Cannon Falls found themselves in an early lead and Blue Earth was unable to catch up.

The Pirates’ opponents scored the first run in the second inning. In the third inning, Cannon Falls brought three runners across home plate.

Blue Earth scored their first run in the top of the fourth inning when TJ Schmidtke crossed the plate. That brought the score to 4-1.

Neither team scored another run until the bottom of the ninth and Cannon Falls brought one more runner home.

Cannon Falls’ last run ended the game with a score of 5-1.

They went on to face Lake Crystal who they defeated twice and became Region champs.

Schmidtke was 3 for 4 batting and scored the one run for the Pirates.

Sukalski was 1 for 4 batting and had one RBI.

Aaron Wendt was 1 for 4 at bat. He also pitched all nine innings for the Pirates. He allowed 13 hits, five runs and one base on balls. He also had six strikeouts.

The Pirates played Winsted on Aug. 17 at 4 p.m. The winner of that game will advance in the state tournament.

If Blue Earth defeats Winsted they will play Waseca in Delano on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
