BEA wrestlers open season with win
A strong start propelled the Blue Earth Area wrestling team to a season opening win over cross county rivals the United South Central Rebels.
The Bucs took the match in Wells last Thursday night with a score of 51-24.
A group of young Buccaneer wrestlers came roaring out of the gate and BEA was able to take the first five matches.
Sophomore Adam Legred opened with a pin in the first period of his match and eighth graders Wyatt Tungland and Zach Buseman followed with decisions to put the Bucs out in front 12-0 right away.
The Bucs were not done.
A pin by sophomore Camden Bowers over Brett Burne, a decision by senior Alec Huber over Adam Knutson and a forfeit to sophomore Jordan Stelter gave BEA a huge 27-0 advantage.
The Rebels finally got started and with three straight pins narrowed the gap to 27-18. Dylan Herman, Derek Herman and Seth Olson notched the pins for USC over BEA’s Tanner Wolf, Mike Ankeny and Brandon Williams.
BEA’s David Franta received another forfeit to put the maroon and gold up 33-18.
The Rebels final points came on a pin at 182 pounds by state wrestler Colten Carlson over the Buccaneer Jacob Johnson.
BEA, however, took the final three matches with Jared Armon’s pin over William Borkenhagen coming in between two more forfeits by USC to Gus Phillips and Martin Granados.
“This was a good first match for us,” Buc coach Randy Wirtjes says. “I really liked the way our younger wrestlers hung in there and came through in tight matches.”
Next up for the Buccaneers was their own Maher Invitational held this past Saturday after this week’s deadline for this issue of the Faribault County Register.
