Buccaneers drop Fairmont
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team outscored the Fairmont/ Martin County West squad by 30 points on their way to a big 48-18 win on Friday night, Jan. 10, in Blue Earth.
The Bucs trailed once early in the match, but flexed their muscles and cruised to their second South Central Conference win of the season.
Adam Legred got things started for the Bucs with a pin at 106 pounds to put BEA up 6-0 right away.
Zach Buseman wrestled to a 3-3 tie at 113 pounds, but lost the match on a tie-breaker. When Wyatt Tungland was pinned at 120 pounds, the Bucs found themselves behind for the first and only time, 9-6.
BEA regained the lead when Camden Bowers won by forfeit at 126 pounds. Alec Huber added to the lead when he pinned his opponent at 132 pounds and Jordan Stelter pinned his man at 138.
BEA led 24-9.
Mike Ankeny lost his 145 pound match by a score of 10-5 and Luke Schavey fell 5-2 at 152 pounds to No. 7-ranked Class AA wrestler, Joe Weber and the Cardinals had caught up a little at 24-15.
Then the Buccaneers won the next four matches in a row and put the contest out of reach.
Gus Phillips won a 9-6 battle at 160 pounds. David Franta pinned his opponent at 170 pounds, as did Kolt Gorg at 182. Jacob Johnson made the score 42-15 when he decisioned his man at 195 pounds with a close 7-6 victory.
Jared Armon lost his 220-pound match by a score of 10-4 to give Fairmont/ MCW its final tally of 18, while Martin Granados pinned his opponent at 285 pounds to give the Bucs their final score of 48.
Granados is currently ranked fifth in state in Class A.
The Bucs were scheduled to be competing in the Estherville, Iowa tournament on Saturday, after the deadline for this week’s Register. Details will be included in the next edition.
This week BEA travels to St. Peter on Friday and to Luverne on Saturday.
