BEA wrestlers sweep weekend matches
Six wrestling matches in two days.
That is what the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team faced on Friday, Jan. 17, and Saturday, Jan 18.
And, all six matches resulted in big wins for the Bucs.
They started on Friday night by hosting the Waseca Bluejays for a South Central Conference match up and traveled the next day to the Estherville, Iowa, Invitational where they downed five Iowa teams.
The victories nudged BEA’s overall season record to 16-5, and they are 3-0 in the SCC.
Here are the highlights:
BEA 64, Waseca 5
It was obviously a case of total domination by the Buccaneers over the Bluejays, resulting in the 64-5 score.
BEA had eight pins in the match, won a couple of other matches by large scores, but also pulled out wins in three close matches.
Pinning their Bluejay opponents were; Matt Goodrich at 120 pounds, Alec Huber at 132 pounds, Jordan Stelter at 145 pounds, Luke Schavey at 152 pounds, Gus Phillips at 160 pounds, David Franta at 170 pounds, Kolt Gorg at 182 pounds and Martin Granados at 285 pounds.
Several of the pins came early in the matches. Schavey pinned his man in 30 seconds, Phillips got his in 20 seconds. But Granados beat them both by ending his contest with a fall just 12 seconds into the final match of the night.
“The boys are wrestling well,” Buc coach Randy Wirtjes says. “They are working on getting pins, which gets us more team points.”
Jacob Johnson downed his Waseca opponent by a score of 17-6 at 195 pounds and Adam Legred won with a 6-2 victory at 106.
Zach Buseman pulled out a very close 12-11 victory at 113 pounds, while at 126 pounds, Camden Bowers won a tight 9-7 battle, and at 138 pounds Mike Ankeny notched a 4-2 win.
The Bucs one loss came at 220 pounds where Jared Armon was pinned.
Before that happened, Waseca was actually at minus one for a score, having gotten a team penalty point. The Bluejays six points for the pin at 220 actually became five points, their final tally.
