BEA falls to rival Fairmont

By Staff | Feb 2, 2014

The Blue Earth Area girls basketball team has struggled lately to find their touch.

Even though Kaitlyn Olsen sank a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of regulation, the Bucs fell to the Cardinals 41-32 in Fairmont on Jan. 24.

BEA only converted on 12 of 45 attempts (27 percent).

After trailing 19-17 at halftime, the maroon and gold went on a 9-2 run early in the second half.

Jenna Stevermer hit back-to-back shots before Olsen drained two of her game-high 13 points, to give the Bucs a 26-21 advantage.

However, after the quick start to the second half, all the momentum went downhill from there. The Buccaneers were held to zero points in the next 12 minutes and the Cardinals went on an 18-0 run.

“Fairmont defended us well during that stretch, but we also had some turnovers and forced a few shots,” coach Al Cue says.

Stevermer’s putback basket ended the Bucs’ scoreless span with 3:20 remaining in the game. But, by then the Cardinals built a lead the maroon and gold would not be able to come back from.

Stevermer finished with 11 points.

Cardinal guard Sierra Schultz led the 10th-ranked team in Class 2A with 10 points and eight rebounds.

“The girls played very well on the defensive end of the floor, allowing just 41 points to a very good team,” Cue explains. “They are playing better, but need to put together a complete game.”
