BEA takes SCC championship
That word describes the Blue Earth Area wrestling team’s performance at the South Central Conference Tournament held in St. James on Saturday, Feb. 8.
The Buccaneers took the tournament championship by nearly a 50 point margin, and had six wrestlers crowned conference champions as individuals.
“We had real consistent performances; everyone scored points,” coach Randy Wirtjes says. “The whole team battled hard and had that consistent effort.”
BEA scored 198.5 points to claim the final SCC conference tournament wrest- ling title next year it will be the Big South Conference.
In second place was Fairmont with 149 points and in third was St. Peter with 148. St. James Area claimed fourth with 127 points, New Ulm fifth with 120 and Waseca sixth with 104.5.
The Buccaneers had six conference champions, with all three seniors taking the top spot in the SCC.
The Bucs’ conference champs are:
Zach Buseman at 113 pounds. He defeated Angel Zamarripa of St. James 15-6 in the championship match.
Alex Huber at 132 pounds. Huber downed Collin Thompson of St. Peter 9-2 to claim the championship.
Mike Ankeny at 138 pounds. Ankeny defeated Tristan Hoy of Waseca 4-2 after having scored two pins to get to the championship match.
Gus Phillips at 160 pounds. Phillips also scored two pins in the preliminaries before crushing Tanner Lange of Fairmont 15-5 for the conference crown.
David Franta at 170 pounds pinned Sam Hoppe of New Ulm in the championship match, as well as getting both a fall and a technical fall in the preliminary rounds.
Martin Granados at 285 pounds. Granados did not have to spend much time on the mat. He pinned his first opponent in 26 seconds, his second match ended with him getting a pin in just seven seconds, and he pinned Adrian Moscoffian of Fairmont in 31 seconds in the championship match.
In the other weight classes:
Camden Bowers claimed second place at 126 pounds losing 10-5 to Sage Loredo-Hollon of St. Peter in the championship match. He won his first two matches with pins.
Jordan Stelter also took second place, at 145 pounds. He was pinned by Elijah Gronewold of Fairmont in the championship match. He had advanced with a 10-2 win and a pin in the first two rounds.
Luke Schavey took another Buc second place finish when he lost 5-2 to Joe Weber of Fairmont in the championship round. He had advanced with a bye and a pin in the first two rounds.
At 195 pounds Jacob Johnson also ended in second place, falling 8-4 to Kory Brown of Fairmont. Johnson had won 10-5 and 9-6 in the first two rounds.
Jared Armon took fourth place at 220 pounds. He lost 6-0 to Travis Brock in round three. He had won one match 2-1 and lost one match by a fall in the opening rounds.
Kolt Gorg also took fourth place when he lost to Cole Wilfahrt by injury default in the match for third place. Gorg had a bye and a loss by fall in the first rounds.
Adam Legred took fifth place by defeating Mario Maldonado of Fairmont 12-3 in the fifth place match at 106 pounds. Legred had lost by a fall and a score of 7-0 in his first two matches.
“It was very nice to win the final SCC Conference Tournament,” coach Wirtjes says. “I’m proud of all the guys on the team.”
