BEA falls 3-0 to LCWM in first match of season
It was a challenging way to start the season, but the Blue Earth Area volleyball team already knew that would be the case.
The BEA Buccaneers played their first game of the season last Tuesday against the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights, which consequently was also their first loss of the season as well.
“We always start with a tough team,” Buc coach Donna Nawrocki said at the start of the team’s practice this season. “It’s a good time to work out some kinks for the season.”
The maroon and gold lost the first two games which ended with a similar score:?25-11 and 25-12.
In the third game of the evening it looked as though the teammates who were playing together for the first time were starting to get more in sync with one another.
Although the Bucs lost the third game, they came within just six points of their opponents, finishing the game 25-19.
The Bucs have five seniors on varsity, and returning senior Mariah Twedt was the leader for the night in digs as she tallied 14 against the Knights.
Elizabeth Ellis went for a perfect 7 for 7 behind the service line, accounting for four points.
Devyn Braunshausen had eight digs and three kills and Kylie Ahl helped out with three set assists.
The team, also consists of four sophomores and three freshmen, and these younger players were expected to see some varsity action.
This was the case with sophomore Kaylor Jacobs, who found action all around the court last Tuesday night.
Jacobs went 8 for 10 behind the service line with two ace points and scoring four points. She also had eight digs and two kills at the net.
Freshman Alissa Norman also racked up some stats for her first varsity match. She got under the ball and helped out with seven set assists and also had two kills and one ace block.
Lindsey Norman also had one ace block, but she was an asset in digs for the Bucs tallying nine. She also contributed three kills.
The Bucs started out with two non-conference teams. After their loss against LCWM last Tuesday, they played Le Sueur-Henderson last Thursday. The match was played after the Faribault County Register deadline and results will be featured in the next issue.
This week the Bucs will host Waseca on Thursday night.
