Bucs fall to Tigers, 28-7

By Staff | Sep 7, 2014

Two touchdowns late in the second quarter helped propel the visiting Marshall Tigers to a 28-7 victory over Blue Earth Area on August 29.

Lightning in the area resulted in the game being suspended and eventually ended with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter.

Both teams stalled on their initial drives of the evening, but the Tigers made the most of their second possession. Marshall started on their 42-yard line following a BEA punt.

Four plays later the Tigers had crossed into Buccaneer territory to the Bucs’ 42-yard line. A quick slant from quarterback Brad Bahlmann to Nick Saugstad resulted in a touchdown.

The extra point kick was good and Marshall led 7-0 with 2:35 remaining in the first quarter.

A one yard run by Bahlmann capped a seven play, 47-yard drive with 2:04 left in the second quarter. The point after touchdown (PAT) was good to give Marshall a 14-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Bucs, their next drive started with a 10 yard quarterback sack. Two incompletions later the Bucs had to punt the ball from deep in their own territory and Marshall took over on their own 46-yard line with 55 seconds remaining in the first half.

It took the Tigers just three plays to cross the goal line again. A pass from Bahlmann to Sam Marshall covered 44 yards and put the Tigers up 20-0. The PAT was successful and the half ended with the Bucs trailing 21-0.

Blue Earth Area received the kick off to begin the second half. Brandon Olson took the kick at the 20-yard line and returned it 27 yards to the Buccaneer 47 yard line. A run by Conor Barnett moved the ball into Tiger territory to the 45-yard line.

Quarterback Luke Schavey connected with Derek Johns to advance the ball to the 38 line. A Schavey pass to Baily Olson resulted in a gain of nine yards.

A run by Barnett gave the Bucs a first down but the Bucs were guilty of a false start penalty on the next play to make it first down and 15 to go on their own 27-yard line.

Schavey once again found Johnson open and the resulting 16 yard gain gave the Bucs a first down at the 11-yard line. Brandon Olson ran it in from there to put the Bucs on the scoreboard with 8:48 left in the third quarter. Sam Hahn added the extra point kick to make the score 21-7 in favor of Marshall.

Marshall returned the ensuing kick off 49 yards to the Blue Earth Area 31 yard line. It took the Tigers nine plays to add another touchdown. The PAT was good and the score stood at 28-7 in favor of the Tigers with 3:11 left in the third quarter.

Shortly thereafter lightning lit up the sky to the south and a delay was announced shortly before 9 p.m. The lightning continued and the game was eventually ended at 10:30 p.m.

Luke Schavey completed eight of twelve pass attempts for 54 yards. He also added 21 yards rushing on four attempts. Derek Johnson had four receptions for 38 yards.
