Wrestlers compete in 8 matches

By Staff | Dec 22, 2014

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers competed in eight matches over seven days last week. One match, against New Ulm on Thursday, was cancelled due to too many New Ulm wresters being sick.

Here is a rundown on the rest of the action last week.

Le Sueur-Henderson

Triangular

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers traveled to Le Sueur-Henderson last Tuesday night to participate in a Triangular.

BEA downed the host Le Sueur-Henderson Giants by a commanding score of 51-18, but had to battle back against New Prague in the second match and stage a come-from-behind 34-31 victory.

BEA 51, LS-H 18

The Bucs never trailed to the Giants, but after the first four matches the score was a tight 12-10 in favor of BEA.

Dalton Nagel started the night for the maroon and gold by getting a forfeit at 106 pounds and Cole Klinkner scored a pin at 120 for the Bucs 12 points.

Camden Bowers lost a heartbreaker at 126 pounds, 9-8.

But, BEA recovered with Jordan Stelter at 138 pounds and Mike Ankeny at 145 pounds each notching a pin and six points for the team. Tannor Wolf added a 5-0 win at 152 pounds and that made the score 27-10 in favor of BEA.

Luke Schavey added a pin at 170 pounds, Jacob Johnson won by a forfeit at 182 and Jesus Quintero also notched a pin. That put BEA up 45-14.

After Jared Armon lost a battle at 220 pounds, Martin Granados put the finishing touches on the match by getting a pin in just 53 seconds.

Final score; Bucs 51, Giants 18.

BEA 34, New Prague 31

The second match of the night for the Buccaneers at Le Sueur was far more exciting than the first

BEA took on New Prague, ranked No. 10 in Class AA, and pulled out an exciting 34-31 victory.

The match started out being very tight for a while.

Dalton Nagel got a 14-6 major decision at 106 pounds to put BEA on top 4-0.

But Adam Legred lost by a fall at 113 pounds and the Bucs trailed 6-4.

Cole Klinkner’s 4-1 win at 120 pounds gave the lead back to BEA, 7-6, but it was short-lived when Camden Bowers was pinned at 126 and the Trojans were back on top 12-7.

The lead changed again when Zach Buseman got a pin at 132 pounds and now BEA was up by one at 13-12.

Four losses in a row by the Buccaneers at 138, 145, 152 and 160 pounds put BEA in a deep hole, trailing 31-13.

But the Bucs staged a huge rally, winning all five remaining matches.

Luke Schavey started it out at 170 pounds with a 10-5 win, followed by Jacob Johnson with a 4-2 victory at 182 pounds and an 8-5 win by Jesus Quintero at 195 pounds.

That brought BEA within nine at 31-28, but they would need a couple of big wins at 220 and 285 pounds.

That is just what they got.

Jared Armon pinned his opponent at 220 to get the Bucs within three at 31-28.

A win at 285 pounds would either tie the match or win it for the maroon and gold.

Buc heavyweight Martin Granados put an exclamation point on the match by pinning his Trojan opponent in 36 seconds and giving BEA six points and the thrilling win at 34-31.

Park-Cottage Grove Wolfpack Duals

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team went 3-1 at the Park-Cottage Grove Wolfpack Duals held on Saturday, Dec. 13.

The Bucs only loss was a close 33-29 defeat at the hands of last year’s State Champions from Chatfield.

But, BEA defeated Cambridge 36-30, host Park-Cottage Grove 39-27 and Stillwater 49-21.

The Bucs were without their standout heavyweight wrestler, Martin Granados, at the meet, because he was taking the ACT tests.

Chatfield 33, BEA 29

Chatfield had five pins in the match, while BEA had none, and that proved to be the difference in the final score, as both teams won seven matches each.

After falling behind 27-11, the Buccaneers came roaring back to come within one at 27-26.

Both teams had one more win, but Chatfield’s was good for six points and BEA’s was just for three.

The Bucs got wins from Dalton Nagel at 106 pounds (18-2), Camden Bowers at 126 (6-4) and Mike Ankeny at 145 (5-4).

Then, with the score at 27-11, BEA had Luke Schavey win 6-1 at 170 pounds and Jacob Johnson and Jesus Quintero both pin their opponents to get to within 27-26.

But, BEA forfeited at 220 pounds as Jared Armon moved up to 285 and won there with a 3-0 decision.

BEA 36, Cambridge 30

The Bucs most exciting match of the day was against Cambridge.

BEA led 27-9 when Cambridge mounted a comeback and with a forfeit at 220 pounds, tied the match up at 30-30 with one bout to go.

Jared Armon, filling in at 285 pounds, pinned his man and gave BEA a 36-30 win.

Other Buccaneers winning their matches were Dalton Nagel at 106 pounds (18-3), Cole Klinkner at 120 pounds (17-6), Camden Bowers at 126 (6-2), Zach Buseman at 132 (2-0 in OT), Jordan Stelter (pin), Mike Ankeny (pin) and Jacob Johnson (8-4).

BEA 39,

Park-Cottage Grove 27

The Bucs trailed early, 6-4, but then went on a tear and built up a 30-9 lead against the host Park Wolfpack.

But, the Wolfpack mounted a rally and got close at 30-21 before the maroon and gold cruised from there to a 39-27 win.

Getting victories for the Bucs were Dalton Nagel at 106 pounds (10-0), Cole Klinkner at 120 (6-2), Camden Bowers at 126 (pin), Jordan Stelter at 138 (pin), Mike Ankeny at 145 (15-0), Tannor Wolf at 152 (pin), Jacob Johnson at 182 (9-7 in OT), Jesus Quintero at 195 (11-4) and Jared Armon at 285 (1-0).

BEA 49, Stillwater 21

The Buccaneers actually trailed the Ponies of Stillwater after the first two matches, 6-5. But, from then on it was all Bucs as they shot to a 34-6 lead on their way to a 49-21 victory.

The maroon and gold notched wins from Adam Legred at 113 pounds (17-1), Cole Klinkner at 120 (pin), Camden Bowers at 126 ((10-7), Zach Buseman at 132 (4-0), Jordan Stelter at 138 (pin), Mike Ankeny at 145 (pin) and Tannor Wolf at 152 (pin).

At that point the score was 34-6.

BEA 45, Maple River 27

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team won both of their matches at a triangular meet hosted at Maple River on Friday, Dec. 12.

The Bucs defeated the host Maple River Eagles 45-27, then downed the Lake Mills Bulldogs 58-15.

Against Maple River, BEA started off with a win at 106 pounds by Dalton Nagel by fall, a 4-3 win by Adam Legred at 113 pounds and another pin at 120 pounds by Cole Klinkner.

That put the Bucs ahead 15-0.

BEA’s Camden Bowers lost a 9-6 decision at 126 pounds to the Eagles.

Zach Buseman won 4-1 at 132 pounds, Jordan Stelter won by pin at 138 and Mike Ankeny also pinned his Eagle opponent at 145.

The Bucs led 30-3.

Tannor Wolf was pinned at 152 pounds, but BEA’s Luke Schavey got a pin at 170 and the score went to 36-15.

Jacob Johnson lost at 182 pounds as did Jesus Quintero at 195, both by falls, and the match tightened up with BEA leading 36-27.

Then Jared Armon won a 5-2 decision at 220 pounds and Martin Granados got a forfeit win at 285 and the Buccaneers had their 45-27 victory.
