Buc matmen down Red Bulls, Bluejays

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team dug themselves a big hole when they lost the first four matches and trailed the Waseca Bluejays 17-0 on Thursday night in Waseca.

However, the Bucs only lost one more match the rest of the way out and came home with a huge 48-23 Big South Conference victory over the ‘Jays.

The Bucs’ comeback started with Zach Buseman getting a fast pin at 132 pounds over Nolan Frye.

Then Jordan Stelter defeated Beau Milbrett 9-6 at 138 pounds, Mike Ankeny notched a pin in less than a minute at 145 over Jackson Killian and Tannor Wolf pinned Lucas Maxon at 152.

That put the Buccaneers into the lead for the first time in the match, 21-17.

However, Roger Ziegler was pinned at 160 pounds by Jack Milbrett and the Bluejays regained the lead, 23-21.

But that was all she wrote for Waseca, as the Buccaneers won the next five bouts.

Jesus Quintero pinned Avery Emmons at 172 pounds and Jacob Johnson pinned Cy Kuschel at 185.

BEA was back in the lead at 33-23.

Jared Armon won an exciting 1-0 match over Levi Kuschel at 195 and Lane Anderson won by forfeit at 220.

Buc heavyweight Martin Granados pinned Ben Clayton in exactly one minute into their 285 pound match to end the night.

The Bucs rode the bus back to Blue Earth enjoying a 48-23 win.

BEA 37, F/MCW 24

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestling team lost six matches to the Fairmont/Martin County Red Bulls on Friday night, Jan. 9 including one by forfeit at 160 pounds.

But, they won eight matches and pulled out a Big South Conference victory, winning 37-24.

After Dalton Nagel lost a close, hard-fought match at 106 pounds, 7-6, to Jordan Wolter, the Bucs trailed for the only time in the match, 3-0.

Adam Legred got things back on track with a 13-0 major decision at 113 pounds over Payton Anderson. That put BEA in the lead by one, 4-3.

Cole Klinkner was leading 11-3 when he pinned his 120 pound opponent, Zach Kingnell. BEA led 10-3.

Then Camden Bowers suffered a 7-2 loss to Chris Ettesvold at 126 pounds and the lead was cut to 10-6.

The Buccaneers had three straight wins to go up 22-6.

First, Zach Buseman defeated fellow ninth grader Collin Steuber 2-0 at 132 pounds. Next, Jordan Stelter won 8-3 over Mario Maldonado at 138, then Mike Ankeny won by forfeit at 145.

The Red Bulls came storming back and took the next three matches.

BEA’s Tannor Wolf lost a heartbreaker, 8-6, in overtime to Elijah Gronewold at 152 pounds. The Bucs forfeited to F/MCW’s Tanner Lange at 160 and Roger Ziegler fell 12-8 to Phillip Bowie at 170 pounds.

The score was tightened up at 22-18 in favor of BEA. But the maroon and gold would pin their way to victory.

The Bucs’ Jacob Johnson got BEA going with a one minute pin of Aaron Anderson at 182 pounds. Then Jesus Quintero pinned Riley Seufers in 3:43 at the 220 pound class.

That put the Bucs up 31-18.

BEA’s Jared Armon was pinned at 220 pounds by Red Bull Luis Figueroa and that cut the Bucs lead to 31-24.

At 285, BEA’s Martin Granados Jr. was leading 3-2 over Adrian Moscoffian when he won by a fall at the 5:49 mark.

This week the Buccaneers take on the Saints of St. Peter in a home match on Thursday night.
