Buc wrestlers fall to NRHEG, 39-27
Not a very happy Valentines Day.
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer wrestlers’ season as a team came to an end on Saturday, Feb. 14 in the United South Central gym in Wells.
The Bucs lost the Section 2A semi-finals match to the New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva Panthers by a score of 39-27.
BEA ended the year with a 22-8 overall record and were unbeaten, 5-0, in the Big South Conference east division.
The members of the Buccaneer wrestling team are not all done with this year’s season, however.
The Section 2A Individual Wrestling Meet was held this past Saturday in the BEA gym, after the deadline for this week’s Faribault County Register and results will be included in the next edition.
Against NRHEG, the No. 2 seeded Bucs and the No. 3 seeded Panthers engaged in quite a battle. In fact, at one point in the match the score was tied at 18-18.
“Our injuries we have been having all season did us in,” Buc coach Randy Wirtjes said. “We just could not overcome the deficit with several guys out due to injuries, but the boys gave it a good run.”
Wirtjes says if some of the team members can perform well at the Section Individual Meet, it could take away some of the sting from the loss at the Section Team Meet.
BEA took the early lead against NRHEG when Dalton Nagel pinned his Panther opponent, Brett Kubiatowicz, at 106 pounds and Adam Legred gained a 5-3 decision over Cole Lenort at 113.
That put BEA up 9-0.
But the Panthers won the next four matches to go up 18-9.
Jonah Legred lost to Dylan Kubiatowicz by a fall at 120 pounds, Cole Klinkner lost by a pin to Cordell Peterson at 126, Camden Bowers lost 6-4 to Cole Staloch at 132 and Zach Buseman lost a close 3-2 battle to Alex Merritt at 138.
Mike Ankeny stopped the bleeding by pinning Palmer Peterson at 145 pounds and Jordan Stelter took a close 10-8 decision over Jet Wayne at 152.
That put the score at 18-all.
Three pins in a row, at 160, 170 and 182 pounds, gave the Panthers a 36-18 advantage. Roger Ziegler fell to Jay Hoppe, Jesus Quintero lost to Nick Bartness and Trevor Oppedal fell to Keith Maxin.
Jacob Johnson won a tight 5-4 win over Matt Jensen at 195 pounds, cutting the score to 36-21, but effectively putting the match out of reach for the Bucs with just two matches to go.
At 220 pounds, Jared Armon lost a 6-2 decision to Todd Erickson.
Then the Bucs’ Martin Granados Jr. pinned Zeke Erickson at 285 pounds to end the match and bring BEA’s team season to a close.
Later in the day, No. 1 seed Jackson County Central defeated NRHEG by a score of 41-34 and advanced to the State Team Wrestling Meet.
The Huskies had defeated the No. 5 seed Medford Tigers 63-15 in their first match on Saturday.
