Bucs fall 74-25 to Fairmont Cards

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneer boys basketball team’s season came to a crashing halt in the opening round of the Section 3AA, South Subsection basketball tournament.

The No. 8 seeded Buccaneers ran into a hot-shooting No. 1 seeded Fairmont Cardinal team and ended up losing 74-25 on the Fairmont High School court on Saturday night, Feb. 21.

The Bucs year ended with a 6-20 record.

The Cardinals shot at a 56 percent rate while the Buccaneers were making just 22 percent of their shot attempts.

Fairmont was especially hot in the first half, where they outscored BEA by a score of 46-13. The Cards scored just 28 points in the second half, but the Bucs could only manage 12 more.

While the Cardinals had 13 players make the scoring column, the Buccaneers had just three.

Derek Johnson led BEA with 14 points, making 4 of 15 from the field (including two 3-pointers) and 4 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Teammate Bailey Olson added eight points, hitting 2 of 9 shots from the floor and 4 of 8 from the free-throw line.

The only other Buc to score was Tyler Hannaman who made one 3-pointer on five attempts.

Fairmont’s leading scorer was Anders Landenget who made 15 points for the Cards.

Fairmont also bested BEA in several other stats categories. They out rebounded the Buccaneers 33-13.

Olson grabbed six of those rebounds for BEA. He also had two of BEA’s five steals, while Fairmont had 12 steals and 12 assists. Mathew Bell had two of BEA’s three assists.

The Cardinals went on to win a close 59-50 semifinals victory in the Subsection Tournament over the No. 5 seeded Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights last Tuesday night in Windom.
