Granados takes 4th

By Staff | Mar 9, 2015

Only one of the six Blue Earth Area and United South Central wrestlers who earned trips to the State Wrestling Individual Class A Tournament last week was able to place in the top six in their respective weight classes.

BEA’s Martin Granados Jr. placed fourth in state at 285 pounds, bettering his last year’s sixth place finish.

For Granados, the difference between being in fourth place and being in third place or even higher was a matter of a single point, or two.

The Buccaneer senior started off his State Tourney run in his usual fashion.

He began by pinning Drew Hawk of Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in 3:46. In his next match, Granados pinned Trent Esping of Minneota in 2:52 in the semi-finals.

But, in the quarterfinals, Granados faced Logan Nibbe of Prairie Valley and lost a heart-breaking 2-1 match to the 40-1 record wrestler.

It was to be the first of two matches the Buc senior would lose by a single point.

In the quarterfinals of the wrestle backs, Granados defeated Nate Elzen of Medford by a score of 7-0.

That win put the BEA heavyweight into the battle for third place against Tanner Welsh of Dover-Eyota. And, a battle it was, with Granados losing another heartbreaker match by the score of 1-0.

That gave him the fourth place medal and trophy and a 35-4 season record.

Granados said after the final match that he felt he could have done a lot better (at State) and could not get his offensive attack going.

USC’s Derek Herman won his first match in the 152 pound weight class by defeating Jacob Mages of Paynesville Area by a score of 6-4.

But in the semifinals, Herman lost to Kolton Eischens of Pierz by a score of 14-3.

In the wrestle backs, the USC junior lost to Connor Meyer of Barnesville by a score of 8-0. He ended the year with a 33-6 season record.

Both BEA’s Mike Ankeny and USC’s Adam Knutson were competing in the 145 pound weight class at the State Tournament.

Ankeny lost his opening match to Alex Erpelding of Staples-Motley by a score of 11-6. But, because Erpelding won his next match, Ankeny was able to drop into the wrestle backs. There he lost to Austin Brockhoff of Sibley East, 7-0.

The Rebel’s Knutson also lost his first match at State, falling 3-1 to Damon Schmalzriedt of Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area.

However, Knutson dropped down to the wrestle backs when Schmalzriedt won his next match.

But, the Rebel junior lost 5-2 there to Austin Skillings of Frazee.

As a side note, if the two Faribault County 145 pounders could have won their wrestle back matches, they would have faced off against each other in the next round.

Ankeny, a senior, ended with a 33-10 record and Knutson had a 31-11 record.

The Buccaneer’s Jordan Stelter competed in the 138 pound weight class.

Stelter lost his first match to Tom Tellers of United North Central by a score of 15-9. Because Tellers lost his next match, the Buc junior was eliminated from further competition. He ended the year with a 22-7 season record.

At 132 pounds, BEA freshman Zach Buseman lost his opening match by a score of 6-1 to Joe Fischenich of Windom/Mountain Lake.

But again, because Fischenich lost his next match, Buseman was not able to drop down into the wrestle backs. He ended his season with a 29-15 record.
