BEA, USC players to State

The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers tennis doubles team of Paige Darrington and Natali Fellows took second place at the Section 3A Tennis Tournament last week and advanced on to the State tournament. United South Central Rebels’ player Kia Legred took second in singles and will also be heading to play at the Class A Individual Tournament.

Two Blue Earth Area Buccaneers and one United South Central Rebel are headed to the State Class A Individual Tennis Tournament next week.

The Buc doubles team of Natali Fellows and Paige Darrington took second place at the Section 3A Tennis Tournament last week, earning them a trip to the State.

Likewise, Rebel singles player Kia Legred also took second at the Section 3A Meet and earned the right to go to the State Tourney. She also earned a spot there last year as part of a doubles team.

That State Class A Individual Tournament is set for Oct. 27-30 at the Reed Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis. However, the individual portion of the tourney will be on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 29-30.

Fellows and Darrington were seeded No. 2 in the Section Tournament and that is where they ended up, falling to the No. 1 seed of the St. James doubles team of Ashley Frederickson and Renata Hernandez by a score of 6-2, 6-3.

To get to the championship match, the Buccaneer duo defeated Abby Fitzgerald and Ellie Tonder of Fairmont by a score of 6-2, 6-3, and Emma Brand and Kelly Neuberger of USC by a score of 6-3, 6-4. The USC duo had earlier defeated Kristen Houg and Maya Bledsoe of Pipestone, 6-3, 6-0.

Fellows and Darrington had started off the tourney with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over E. Wendland and S. Wieneke of Luverne.

USC’s Legred lost the championship match 6-3, 6-3, to Aubrey Eckstrom of St. James, the No. 1 seed.

Legred, who was seeded No. 3, had earlier gained entrance to the championship match by defeating the No. 2 seed, Karli Olsen of BEA, by a score of 6-3, 6-4.

Olsen then defeated No. 4 seed Kalyn Haas of River Valley, 6-1, 6-4, to claim third place.

Olsen had earlier defeated Samantha Pierce of Luverne, 6-2, 6-0, and Lauren Lapthorn of Pipestone.

Legred started off the Section with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sarah Stromer of Maple River, followed with a 6-4, 6-0, win over Miranda Jacoby of St. James.

The Buccaneers other singles entrant, Anikka Wilhelmi, opened the Section Tourney with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Lauren Carlson of Fairmont, but then lost 6-1, 6-0 to Eckstrom of St. James.

USC’s other singles player, Carly Weber, defeated Abby Stefan of Pipestone, 6-0, 6-1, but then lost her next match also to the Saints’ Eckstrom, 6-1, 6-1.

BEA’s second doubles team of Lacey Benz and Gracie Leland won their opening match against Alexis Johnson and Lauren Kodet of Redwood Valley by a score of 6-0, 6-0, but then lost the next match to St. James’s Frederickson and Hernandez, 6-0, 6-0.

Likewise the other USC doubles team of W. Martinez and A. Soto won their first match over H. Fogelson and M. Cihoski of Fairmont, 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, but lost their next match 6-1, 6-0 to Frederickson and Hernandez.
