Boys lose in a nailbiter against Bluejays
Blue Earth Area Buccaneer Chris Sanders prepares to fire the ball to first base for an attempt at a double play in the game against the United South Central Rebels last week. Sanders had already tagged out the USC base runner for one out. The Rebels went on to win the game 8-1.
It was a heart breaker for the Blue Earth Area Buccaneer baseball team last Tuesday night.
Despite a valiant effort towards the end of the game, the Bucs fell one run short and lost 3-2 to the Waseca Bluejays.
Waseca scored two runs in the first inning, then added one more in the fourth and that insurance run proved to be the game winner.
The Buccaneers were held scoreless through the whole game until the seventh inning.
BEA’s Cole Hendrickson got on base with a single after there were two outs. He came around to score, as did Kaylan Legred, who also had a single to get on base.
But, the third out came just before BEA was about to get another runner across home plate and tie the game. Alan Davids got a base hit, but a Buccaneer baserunner, Logan Jahnke, was thrown out at home for the third out to end the game.
“Logan had actually beaten the throw to the plate,” says Buccaneer head coach Todd Schmidtke. “But he couldn’t get around the catcher who was blocking home plate. Logan’s foot was about two inches from the plate when he was tagged.”
Collin Bell pitched all six innings for the Buccaneers. He gave up the three runs, all earned, on seven hits. He struck out three and walked one batter.
Kolt Gorg led the Bucs at the plate, going 2 for 2.
Legred and Hendrickson were both 1 for 3, while Jahnke and Davids were 1 for 4. Zac Schonrock was 1 for 2.
The Buccaneers played a game on Friday at New Ulm, after the deadline for this week’s Faribault County Register. Details will be in the next edition.
This week the Bucs play at Worthington on Tuesday and St. James on Friday.
ML-T-GHEC 11, BEA 2
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers traveled to Truman last Monday night and came home with an 11-2 loss to Martin Luther-Truman-Granada-Huntley-East Chain.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, and both teams scoreless in the second, the Buccaneers got both of their runs in the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Cole Hendrickson scored after he had reached base on an error. He was advanced by a sacrifice bunt by Michael Mack.
Kaylan Legred got a base hit to score Hendrickson, then came in to score himself later in the inning.
But, that was all the Buccaneers could do. ML-T-GHEC scored six runs in the bottom of the third, then added two more in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Legred pitched five innings, allowed nine runs and seven hits, had three strikeouts and three walks.
Logan Jahnke pitched one inning, gave up two runs on one hit, struck out one and walked three.
The Buccaneers only had three hits in the game one each by Legred, Hendrickson and Mack.
USC 8, BEA 1
The Blue Earth Area Buccaneers hosted their cross-county rivals, the Rebels of United South Central, in a baseball battle on Friday night, April 22.
The Rebels came out on top of an 8-1 score.
USC scored a run in the first inning, but BEA came back and scored one of their own in the second to tie the game up.
But, the Rebels broke the game open by scoring three runs in the third and four in the fourth.
Meanwhile the Bucs were unable to score any more runs the rest of the way.
The maroon and gold get their one run when Zac Schonrock singled. Pinch runner Joe Schavey then advanced on a couple of sacrifices and eventually came home on a single by Cole Hendrickson.
Leading the hitting for the Buccaneers was Alan Davids who was 3 for 3. Kolt Gorg was 2 for 3.
Chris Sanders and Logan Jahnke also had hits for the Bucs. BEA had a total of nine hits in the game.
Schonrock pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up four runs, one of them earned, on three hits. He had no strikeouts and walked three.
Davids came in and pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on three hits. He struck out two and walked four.
